Hi from another newbie & thermometer question

Hi everyone, we've had our BGE since the GREEN holiday (St. Patty's) and have really enjoyed cooking on the egg. The information here has really helped us get further in the learning curve for most everything we've tried.
I see lots of posts about the Thermapen & people rave about it. I haven't bought one yet. Yesterday I saw something that looks similar & is BGE brand. It is $22 & available locally. I haven't seen any posts about it & wonder if anyone has any experience with it. I know you usually get what you pay for but this is about 1/5 the price of the Thermapen. If it is slightly slower, I could probably deal with that since we aren't doing competition cooks! At the same time, I don't want to waste $22 on something worthless & would rather put that toward the purchase of the Thermapen.
Thanks!

When I first got my egg I asked the forum the same question. Read all the posts with the advice to get a Thermapen.
I really didn't want to spend that much money so I started buying other thermometers. After spending more than it would have cost to get a Thermapen I ended up buying a Thermapen. I wasted a lot of money before getting the Thermapen and highly recommend you getting a Thermapen at first. It made a huge difference in the quality of my cooking.
Thermoworks usually has refurbished units on sale for 30 to 45 percent off with full warranty.

spend the money and get it. you will find that other pens/probes dont last, there readings are far from true temps.

BGE's accessories are not the end all, be all. There are many companies that make great accessories for the egg. I would definitely get the Thermapen.

Thanks all for the fast replies! Thermapen ordered!

A little pricey, but you wont regret it. You may find yourself using it in the kitchen too.

You won't regret your order. Early on I spent about $15.00 on a thermometer. Was not happy with it at all and then bought the Thermapen.
