Not sure which one of these I should buy. Seems like everyone is saying the Thermapen but the PT 100 looks and seems better. Your opinion would be very helpful....Thanks

I'm not familiar with the Maverick but you can't go wrong with a Thermapen. -RP
  • I found this review on Amazon about the PT-100:

"This product is a Chinese rip off, in form only, of the ThermoPen which is hand assembled in England. I just returned the second replacement of this totally inaccurate and irreproducible thermometer to Maverick Industries. Don't waste your time and money on this terrible product. As soon as I finish this review I am going to buy the splash resistant ThermoPen from ThermoWorks. I just wish I hadn't wasted almost three months testing and returning the PT-100."

It was the only end user review I was able to find on the Maverick. As opposed to 100's of reviews on this forum alone of the Thermapen. I use a thermapen, I suggest you do too.

on top of that Amazon's price is $89.95 so it's not a bargain anyway!

You are right. I just wanted your thoughts on this. I haven't purchased it yet but after the problems with the 73 I don't see myself buying another Maverick product. Thanks

I don't know anything about the Maverick product, but I have a Thermapen. Mine did have a problem: it measured temp quite slowly. It could take 20 or more seconds. I just thought this is the way they work. One day here on the forum people were talking about their Thermapens reading instantly (1-3 seconds) and I thought they were joking. Grandpas Grub was kind enough to get me contact info for Thermoworks. I didn't have any paperwork supporting my purchase. Their customer service gave me a RA#, telling me they would take care of whatever the problem happened to be. I sent it in, they fixed it, works fine now. I don't think that would have occurred with a Maverick.

I bought the PT-100 over the thermopen a couple months back, and I have been pleased with it. I recall the two having similar specs, but the back lit LCD drove me to the Maverick. Most my cooking gets done in the dark, so that's turned out to be an essential feature for me.

I can't make direct comparison, but I did put the probe in some boiling water. The temperature reading was as expected and the settling time on the reading was within a few seconds. Basically, it works for me...
  • I have had Thermapen for 3 or 4 years ( can't remember exactly) never had a problem with it. Sometimes though I have experienced operator error due to alcohol.

That happens to me and I don't even have one...so it sounds like a 50/50 on the 2. Operator error is another topic :)
  • Thermapen here. It is the only thing that I have bought for my egg that has worked as described.
