What is it about the egg?

Can someone articulate just exactly what it is about the egg that is so fascinating? A very good friend of mine (“Chipmunk Bill” will be his forum name as soon as I can convince him to buy a computer), has been enjoying all the things I have cooked on the egg for many years, and last year, bought his first egg. He called me yesterday to tell me about his first pulled pork cook, which he did for his daughter’s baby shower. I’ve known him for many years, but I’ve never heard him so happy, kept saying he couldn’t explain why he was so happy; was it the egg, the process, the aroma, the final product??? I told him I wasn’t quite sure, but there’s no need to explain, I get it, every cook is at least as exciting as the last one, & it never, ever, goes away. I’ve tried explaining this phenomenon to various curious over the years, however, I have seen more than one blank, puzzled stare back at me :blink:
How do you/would you explain this to someone who knows nothing of the egg?

agreed, but isn't there some sort of 'x' factor involved? Any good tool will improve your game, but I've not seen or experienced the joy associated with the egg in any other implementhappy in the hut

JK, ususally just explaining the efficiency of a "ceramic" smoker, coupled with the fuel we use, is enough to get a conversation started. Folks are amazed at how long it will cook w/o opening the egg. It usually evolves into the history of kamado cookers and snowballs from there until I have to cook for them. :huh: -
My contractor was over last night, to get the plans for my table, sorry no pics I just pulled off a pizza off the egg. He ate it and soon we will have another egger. I could not shut up about the egg, his wife was going to buy him a Taegar for his birthday but he talked here out of it but he will be talking to her about getting a egg. I don't know I have been cooking on my egg for a year and I am still so happy about my egg. I know people get tired of me talking about it but I can't help it. I showed him the forum and pics. Sorry this is so long.

Good question to ponder... I love its' versatility and efficiency; in times of high stress and finding time for ourselves, I like that it gives me an excuse to be outside! Although our goal is to have great food, I do think the egg family is a part of it for me :laugh: Corny maybe, but being able to share this with my brother and others definately adds to the overall package for me!
P. S., I'm getting used to that "she has three heads" look too! :laugh: :woohoo: -
"have to cook for them" :laugh: , that's tough duty no doubt, but yes, I have found that if someone actually sees the process & eats the food, there is no need for explanation, sort of the picture is worth a 1000 words scenariohappy in the hut

My brother claims it is something in the ceramic that causes you to become compulsive. Otherwise he claims, how can you explain why a 65 year old single lawyer (himself)will fire up his mini-egg when he gets home at 11PM after a long day in court to cook a single hamburger.

For me, it's the heat, the food, and the sharing. And the fact that I'm cooking in a big ceramic jar that has a lot of history. Everything comes together around the egg.

there is no easy answer here.. the egg, for many of us is a creative outlet and an escape from the drudgery of daily life,, there are skills to master, physical and intelectual and creative, good for those of us that need that challenge, however the egg does not bleed, need to have a legal brief written, a spread sheet made, be arressted or any of the other work stresses that we all have. there is the comfort of home cooked food in this age of fast food.. there is actually a slow food movement to encourage people to cook and eat with their families??? [they need a website to do that?} ,, 'to share a meal' i think the egg is a focal point for those that need to do that... while many of us grew up with that and continue that.. there are the soccer mom families who often do not sit together at dinner. then there is the fire,, something very comforting for the inner caveman about cooking on 'fire' .. and then there is the quality of the egged food.. the pits were afraid of the first chicken i cooked ,, it was so juicy they did not believe it was fully cooked,, you cannot do that in an oven or on a gasser,, and lastly there is the love.. your friend cooking special for a special occasion in his life served to friends and family.. to paraphrase Emeril ' they felt the love" . i love cooking for the pits,, Dad this steak is better than Mortons' Dad right that down so you can do it the exact same way.. or my friends ,, " dropping off belly meat " my [jewish] wife needs to gain weight and just 'found' bacon would you make bacon for her?
or 'that is the best pastrami i ever had. if you want to start a business i will be your silent partner"..

Julia, you have hit on the most important aspect, the outsideness of it all, we all share in common an understanding that food doesn't "have to" be cooked in a climate controlled environment complete with buttons & certainty, its the caveman in us that's still alive & kickinhappy in the hut

Zip, Ive never been able to put into words for others either. When I try to explain it to someone most will just have an inquisitive or blank look on their face. If I tell them I have 3 BGE's they are really taken aback. The only way I've been able to explain, like others have said, is to cook something for them and wait for the nod of approval.

Then there are those who have never used, don't get it, and probably never will.
I shared a picture of a cook on an all purpose cooking forum I have been visiting a little. My Small was included in the pic, resulting in about a dozen replies telling me how overpriced eggs are and a $50 brinkman electric will do the same. I just let it go.... -

I talk about the egg so much my wife is getting jealous. I was talking to one of my friends about how happy I am with the egg. To which my wife replied that she is going to drill a hole in it and put a dress on it. To which I replied, the dress is fine but no holes it would make It to hard to control the cook.

bill, FYI, I am a card carrying member of Slow Food USA, the US chapter of the Slow Food movement. I think this article describes the group better than the Slow Food USA website, http://www.sallybernstein.com/food/single-articles/slow_food.htm Seriously, I think you might find this organization worth considering.
I hope to someday attend the Salon de Gusto, but it conflicts with the Eggtoberfest. I do have my priorities.

I have set here and thought of a dozen comebacks for your wife but wont disclose the bad ones. :laugh: :laugh: I would have told mine to make sure to use a hole saw so you could keep the plug to put back in it when you were done :woohoo: :woohoo: Mine is always making snappy comments about mine too. All in fun though. My firends will call and ask where i am and she will say " aww he's outside makin love to his eggs" :woohoo: :woohoo: But her butts the first one in the chow line!!! I love it!

Oh yea, and all that other stuff that comes with being an Egghead.
