i am going to look at a used egg. its approx 5 ot 6 years old. it hardly looks used. the gasket is still gray. its been stored outside not covered. the bottom vent is rusted. is there anything else to look for? can you tell if lighter fluid has been used in it?
thanks
thanks

I would simply check for cracks. If it is 5-6 years old with the original gasket (and it is grey) I wouldn't think it was used a lot. Might ask if the gasket was ever changed, but that wouldn't impact my decision - gaskets are almost a consumable for Eggs that are used frequently.

The only thing I'd really be worried about is if ice formed in the bottom. Ice pressure can be fierce. Take out the fire box and ring, and look at the very bottom. Myself, I'd be concerned if there was a ring of cracks near the bottom. That is, look to see if ice expanded in the bottom, and cracked the body.
FWIW, I have a large piece of broken platesetter that has been sitting on the ground for 4 winters now, and has not deteriorated any more than after it fell. Egg ceramic is tough. -
Sounds new
I cooked by a few War Eagles at last Octoberfest - nice guys. Everytime an Auburn fan would come by there was just four words spoken "War Eagle" answered with "War Eagle"

you say the bottom vent is rusted which means that egg is older than 5 or 6 years because they switched to stainless vents years ago!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

another tip off is what kind of band does it have - that will really help to date it.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

what do you mean kind of band?

You have email

a band means the two metal pieces with a hinge that holds the dome and base together. a scissor hinge on anything other than a mini means that's an old egg! Then the next generation was a locking one with a lever which is also NOW old. You want a band that is spring assisted and can be opened and closed with just one hand. The other (older) bands required 2 hands.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time
