24 hour butt question?

Ive got a close friend who swears by this technique. He smokes the butt by putting it on when the fire is first lit and the egg is coming up to temp. he settles the egg at 225/230 dome and lets it go for 12hours. he then pulls the butt, wraps in hd foil, and places it back on the egg at 225/230 for another 12 hours. doesnt check its temp, doesnt open lid but twice,once to foil and once to remove! uses around 9-10 lb butts only. is this risky or sound? I will say this, its the best d--n butt I ever had.

Then you answered your own question...if it is good don't knock it right? There are lots of different ways to cook butts...your friends is just one.

good is good. bet if he had a thermo in there he could pull it sooner with some temp adjustments, save some lump, and it would be just as good. im sorry, i have this need to always tweak a recipe :laugh: :laugh: good is goodfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

thats what I was thinking. I like it but, butt is butt and done right its always good. I dont want to waste the lump!

if you like the results with foil try cooking one to about 175 to 180, then wrap and finish with foil, you can even bring the temps up to 300 or so to finish. i like a hard crunch almost burnt crust so im not a foilerfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it
