An infra red thermometer will only read surface temperature..so as far as you meat goes it will not give you internal temp...if you are looking to use it for something other than meat temp they might be fine...not sure where they would be practical or applicable in Egg cooking....
  • Thermapen works great. They are a bit pricey, but they seem to be the gold standard. I got mine through a forum member. Send an email to Mollyshark when she is here to get details.

    Good luck and have fun.

If IRT is instant read I think this will work.

I have a Thermapen from Thermoworks which I use for measuring the internal temps of meats and breads. It is the model that preceded the splashproof model; it gives quick temperature readouts and has become an indispensible tool in the kitchen. This is the type which is frequently recommended on this forum. I also have a digital infrared thermometer which I purchased from Thermoworks around Christmas in 2009. It was a special deal, and cost around $49. I use the digital infrared thermometer for reading surface temperatures, such as the platesetter temp when I am cooking pancakes on it or when I bake a pizza on it. The infrared thermometer is not a must have tool, but it is a neat instrument.

  • I found this awhile back and no matter what IRT means, this one will do the trick. The price is very competetive with the Thermapen and you get IR capability to to boot.

  • You could use an Infrared thermometer to get the temp of your pizza stone where you want it. Also, you can measure temp of pans. Some folks can do things by "touch" and others like to have a "number". You can find fairly cheap Infrared thermometers that might be fun to play with.

I have a relatively expensive (for my budget at least) IR thermometer that I have used for various testing things, but lately I've used it to discover that Scooby the Wonder Dog had a hot paw, and that after the wife (yes, the wife who...) and go for our nightly walk in the code, she with gloves on and me barehanded, her hands are 10 degrees cooler than mine immediately after we get in the house. See? Very useful, lol!
