Using Steam to Clean Grid

Some time ago I saw a TV ad showing one of those hand-held steam cleaners cleaning a really dirty BBQ Grid. The grease and crud came right off.

I made a mental note to look into it more. Never did.

But today we used one of those Shark Steam Pocket Mop cleaners to do the floor and WOW!!! it really did a great job. So I got to thinking back to that hand-held steam cleaner and how well it appeared to clean the grid.

I did a search on the Forum and discovered a number of posts about grid cleaning but none specifically addressing steam cleaning.

Have any of you ever used a steam cleaner to clean your grid? If so, please share your experience or thoughts on the idea.

I haven't done the steam thing, but I have a small power washer that puts out 1,400 psi that makes quick work of a grill, but also creates another mess doing it.

I've never cleaned a grid. Ok, once in a while I brush off the excess. But that's it. B)

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Our local news station has one of those "Does It Work?" segments where they try out gadgets to see if they live up to their claim. They did a test on a steam grill cleaner. It passed.I watched the segment. They had to follow the directions to the letter. It seemed like a PITA.You have to preheat the grill and the steam gadget did clean the grill but it was SUPER SLOW.I could clean a hot grill just as clean with a good wire brush in about 1/3 the time. ;) I'm not saying not to buy it,just that I would not. :)
  • I know what you mean about the pressure washer. I have one that does about 2,500 psi, enough to cut through a board using the jet stream. I decided to hit the grid with it and instantly wished I hadn't. Grease and crud went flying everywhere.

Live and learn and sometimes be humbled by the process, especially when you try it again with the same results.

  • That's what I do now but immediately after every cook. But I'm always open to making something look new again.

  • I'm sure it would clean better if the grid was first doused with Pam or some other type of 'no stick' product.

I know it's much easier to clean Love Bugs off windshields that have been treated with RainX first.

Of course I could always stack all the dirty grids and stuff in the Egg and let'er rip for an hour or so.

  • I always heat my egg up and hit with a wire brush before the next cook hits the grid. Works great for me.
  • No fair!!!!

  • I brush mine immediately after taking the meat off. It's easier that way.
