Shrimp on the barbie... errr.... egg

Last night, my wife had some medium size shrimp that she placed on skewers and wanted me to grill.

Fired up the egg (about 30 minutes) so I could grill the shrimp for probably about 5 minutes.

They came out great. I was thinking about doing them on my gas grill, since it was going to be a quick grill. In the end, though, I am so glad I did them on the egg, the flavor was awesome.

It feels wierd lighting up a batch of charcoal to cook something that will just take around 5 minutes to finish.

Anyway to speed up the charcoal prep time? I've heard some people say that they can get the grill to temp very quickly (10 min), but then it seems that most people say you need to wait about 30 minutes to let the smoke, etc., clear from the charcoal. What's the concensus?

Thanks!

If you are reusing coal you can cook as soon as it comes to temp but if you add new lump, wait for the smoke to clear. -RP
  • You've just hit on a good reason to buy a mini: quick to light, uses minimal charcoal, and perfect for hot/fast cooks.

I have the same thinking as AZRP. The used lump has already been "seasoned" by having the voc's burned off. As long as I haven't added any new lump I start cooking when I get to temp. That is unless I use a starter cube then I make sure that has completely burned before I start cooking.
  • I've had my XL for six months and have a lot to learn. But todate, I've never had a fire to cooking temps, and stabilized in 10 minutes. I don't use a mapp, usually an electric starter. Normally takes me 30-40 minutes to be where I want to be. But being retired I have the time. On a nice day, it provides time to have a beverage, helps season the cook.
