Technically Speaking (raised grid)

Is it a raised grid even if it's just the legs up plate setter that's holding up the grate?
Or is a raised grid only a raised grid if it's the fancy AR doing the heavy lifting?
Sincerely,
Over Thinking in Montana
PS: Moments away from spatchcocking my first bird. The Spine-ectomy, seasoning and 'fridging for now. Cooking tomorrow! Hence the question. Hoping I can just invert the plate setter, slap the factory grid on top of that and then lovingly place Rosie the hen on that.

By using the platesetter you are now cooking "indirect"...raised grid or not spatchcock chicken is cooked direct, so that wouldn't follow the way others cook them..
-
Damn it. You're right. I'm screwed....
-
put something...that wont burn or melt....on top of the firering to raise the grid up as much as you can...friebricks work fine, but also not something most people have layin around.....some 3 or 4" bolts in the grid...stainless prefereably...or only put 1/2 or 1/4 the amount of lump..cant raise the grid..lower the fire....we aint biuldin rockets...
do whatever will work for ya.. -
Wess pretty much answered your question.
but, ah. Pynchon? excellent. gotta love T.P. -
Yup, whatever you have layin' around. I use three of these...
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Others have answered the raised grid question. I did one spatchcock chicken direct and the grease burning on the lump gave the bird a bad taste and now I only do them indirect. Good luck.

You my friend, I have no doubt could egg a rocket and make it turn out awesome...but please don't try this at home..save it for a fest...LOL

I gotta get me one of those frakkin' ARs. But until then, firebricks are easy. Plenty down at the ACE down the street. I wonder if it'll be safe to use those bricks vertically.
Yeah StripSteak...always had a weakness for good ol' Tommy P! Just digging into Inherent Vice. Liking it so far. It's got Pynchon's voice, but a lighter read - if you can believe it. You a fan too, eh? -
a lighter read?!!?
hahaha
is there such a thing?
yep, T.P. and J.J.
J.J. is my go-to, but even then J.J.'s F.W. kicks my *ss. -
Michael, did you notch out the fire ring? Great idea but warranty?
Just looked at the square stock a little closer, looks like you made a "U" in the bottom. Slick!!! I now know how I am going to make a larger jerky rack, maybe even a double decker at that.
Got to love the forum and the ideas that come up now and again.

I just use one of these to get my raised grid effect.

Yep, I notched the tubing, not the fire ring. They are a bit wobbly, but they've stayed put so far. With the CI grid anyway. Never tried them with the stock grid. Might be better if I welded some 1/4" rod to connect the dots into a triangle, but it seems fine like this. For just holding a grid anyway. Not sure about a jerky rack.
They are just mild steel, not stainless. Some scrap I had laying around. I had to sandblast the powdercoat off before I used them. Now they are powdercoated with egg crud!
I do wonder about the two thin edges of each piece pressing down on the fire ring though. Would hate to find out that it's like scoring a piece of glass with a glass cutter! Then again, they are never placed in exactly the same spot so maybe it doesn't matter. Now I am the one who's overthinking. :SI hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!
