Forbidden Black Rice = wild rice?

I still have not been able to find any Forbidden Black Rice from China locally. However as I was lining up tonight's supper I got out a package of Gibbs brand 100% wild rice which is pure black and it dawned on me it's probably the same thing! So I've been serving it with special meals for years! Essentially the same thing - just a different country of origin - right?

Not sure if there is a different country or origin or one is wild and the other cultivated. Have cooked both, but never compared the uncooked grains. Think they are different as the oriental is sweet and starchy.

Wild rice is not rice. Black rice is a short grain true rice.

Little Steven, you are 100% correct!
If memory serves, wild rice is actually a grass seed family.
We use it a lot (hotdish, pancakes, stuffing, meatloaf.....), but it is not a true rice.
BTW, Gibb's is produced here in my neck of the woods!
Ricing (harvest and processing)is a pretty large part of the local econamey. -

Yes, it is the seed of a water grass that grows in colder climates. I believe it is related to rye grass.

dummy me read the term Wild Rice printed 10 times on the outside of the Gibbs box and just assumed it contained Wild Rice. Oh well, for tonight's meal of Chicken Kiev that Pat's fixing it will compliment the meal nicely even if it's some hand picked weed from the marshes!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

We get Forbidden Black Rice from an Asian market. Comes in a little bag. Very tasty, too.

As is wild rice, tasty that is. Just not the same tasty.

It IS called / named "Wild Rice".
This may be from / translated from....the Native American (at least Chippewa) Mahnomen.
Really don’t know where it all originated, but wild rice is wild rice...even if it’s not a rice.
