More affordable Thermopen

I saw this posted on another board and think that I might go this route vs the $80 for the other one. 6 seconds seems pretty good to me considering that I have made it all this time with cheap POSs from wally world and such. Considering ThermoWorks reputation, I would think that this is probably a decent value. Any opinions would be appreciated.

I just purchased the Thermapen for online for $96. I gives me a temp in 2 secs instead of 6 secs. 4 secs is a long time to me w/ my hand inside a grill at 600. Just my opinion. It's $16, pay the difference and keep the hair on your hand.

Sorry bout that. It's $29, not $80. That is a pretty good deal, but I'd still pay $96 for 2 sec reading.

I agree that at 600°, 6 seconds is a long time. :woohoo: I normally don't need to take a temp reading for my steaks though.

I found it wasn't a one time investment. As soon as I had used it for a while I bought one for everywhere else I may be forced to eat... :laugh: :evil:

Here is what I say; get it and let us know how you like it. For $29 it surely ain't gonna break you. Then if you want to go faster get the faster one then you will have two around the house. Heck their both made by thermapen and the one you are thinking about getting can be immersed. On top of that if you can't stand it give thermapen a call and maybe they will exchange it for the switchblade model. What do you have to loose? You have gone this long with out the best one.

initial temp reading and final temp reading are different things.

you'll get A temperature in 6 secs, but not THE temperature.

in a look-a-like, the initial reading comes up quickly enough, but then climbs to the final temp in two-second intervals

always amazes me when someone drops a grand on a grill and then quibbles about a thermapen

I got one.(thermapen) two,three weeks ago.First time took at least 8 or nine seconds and burned hairs.Reading this I boiled some water opened pen (66degs)took nine secs to get to 212.Did it three times quickest was 8 secs.Do you think this is a faulty pen?

If it's on the slow end. You can get it up to temp by sticking the tip in the daisy for a bit, until it is at roughly your meat temp. Then it won't have as far to travel.

Looks like that might be a really nice value. It says they upgraded this model with the superfast tip. My $80 version takes at least 4 or 5 seconds from a cold start anyways. I'd get it if I didn't have three thermapens.

The four seconds more won't make a bit of difference with this. Seeing it only reads up 300 degrees

I use my Thermopin for some internal temps above 300 but not meat. It does have an IP65 rating which is good

As long as it gets to about 205°(somewhat quickly), I should be in good shape

If you decide to get one I sure would be interested in hearing how you like it. I don't think I would get in instead of my Thermapen but it would be nice as a second thermometer.
