I am Going to fire up the BGE for my first cook this weekend. Does anybody have any suggestions for my first cook? I was thinking along the lines of a pork tender loin or some ribs but not set in stone. Does anybody have any better ideas for my first cook? Thanks

  • I'd recommend playing w/ it a few times before you cook on it. Take time to learn how to adjust and hold temp. Car Wash Mike's Ribs are fantastic. My first cook w/ ribeye at 700 degrees.

    Both are good ideas. Another one would be to do a whole chicken. Indirect around 350-375 until done.
    Don't "practice" before cooking. It's a waste of lump, and whole chickens are cheap.

    That's what I did for my first cook, several years ago, and many since. Tenderloin would be quick and easy too, might want to save the ribs until you have a little experience with temp. control. Congrats on the new Egg, I am sure you will enjoy it!

    Hey Adam, I'm not a big spatchcocker. Maybe I just dont get it. I know most forum members are on board with the spatchcocking. IMO, if you are gonna spatchcock, why not just go ahead and break it down, then do chicken parts?

    I'd say start with whatever you want to eat.

    Other than pizza, everything I have tried has come out tasting great. And most of the pizzas did too, but I have messed a few up.

    First three cooks were burgers, pizza, and ribs. This post shows the pizza disaster. Burgers and ribs came out great.

    If you do a tender loin you wont be dissapointed!! Great choice. The spatchcocked is another great one. Heck, do 'em both and wow the crowd!! :)

  • I cooked two Spatchcocked chickens my first cook and they turned out great. Naked Whiz iz where I got the recipe and info form.

    Like Bacchus says "chickens are cheap".
  • Man all these suggestions sound awesome. I think I will start with the chicken and if my temp. Control is doing ok I might go ahead with the tender loin. Thanks for all the great ideas keep em' comin. I'm really excited about this weekend, can't wait to fire it up. Thanks Eggheads

  • I too thought I should have started with butts are ribs on my first cooks. Nope! Did hamburgers first and then a standing prime rib roast. Man, it was great! And the LBGE gets all the credit because I had no idea what I was doing! Then I did spatchcocked chicken and then ribs, and then a picnic. Then pizza. Everything was great except I cooked the pizza to hot. Will do that again this weekend as well. I plan to cook all day Saturday. And a half day on Sunday. And I just got my LBGE for Christmas! Cook anything and take pics, lots of pics! Enjoy!
