Pre-emptive gasket protection

Gasket on my XL BGE is "just OK", but starting to show the signs...

Was wondering if, when making the egg go super-nova for pizza and such, spritzing the gasket with water might be an effective protection?

Has anybody tried this? I think I will experiment with this...

I might keep the spritzing for ribs and replace that felt one with a high temp gasket. Eggs are porous and hot and don't need/want any water on or around them while cooking. I put the Nomex on the base only and problem solved.

I'm with Adam. Its felt, its gonna go eventually. There are folks here who lost their gaskets long ago and never replaced them. I'm in the nomex camp. Replacing a gasket isn't fun, but it'll get done eventually.

As least you have warning yours is going out. Mine "fell off" one in the middle of a big steak cook and the other during pizza.

"Showing Signs" just means it is getting broken in good. The felt collects grease and gets charred, maintaining a "seal". No reason to do anything unless you just want something to do, and maybe brag about.

i agree, if its blackening/charring/shrinking and still sticking you got a good gasket. i might reset the dome as the gasket shrinks over time but thats all. my last egg i bought when all the problems seemed to be starting, i just removed it day one and then started cooking

Spritzing the gasket... I would wonder if there would be a potential for generating steam and possible even more heat on the gasket/adhesive.

    Just a thought.

    That's my thoughts too.

  • I replaced mine with nomex and now the back side on the bottom has slid out into the fire. I said "forgetaboutit!" Monday she saw it and said "you got to fix that!" I told her it wont' catch fire and I will fix it. I am thinking July...
