The 13" small or the 15" medium work on the spider.
I use the 15" medium on mine:
**** See TJV's post below, I have the older spider (pre 2008) ****
**** Newer spiders only work with the 13" small cast iron grid ****

THat my friend is AWESOME!!! Thanks
-
YOU get it from a dealer?
-
I'm with Avacados. I bought the CI sized for the small, and when more than 3 people join us for din, I becomes a lesson in shift cooking. I think if you can lay out a little extra cash, a little extra space would be worth it.
-
Another option I like is to take out the regular fire ring and use the special 2" ring with the 18" large cast iron grate for even more grilling space down close to the coals:

I'm here in Atlanta so get most of my eggcessories from the mothership.
Or from my local dealer (Ace Hardware) which is only 3 miles away. I'm lucky that they also stock Wicked good lump and the Dizzy pig offerings!! -
I used the BGE CI 13" grid for the small - bought from my local dealer. Works good for searing on the spider and I can also use it on my small.
-
Yes you get the cast iron food grates from the dealer
-
where do you get that 2inch ring? how much?
-
It is an official BGE item that they came out with a couple years ago after they made a 3-layer grid and folks wanted it lower in the cooker.
Any dealer can order it (Item # 2LFR 2-inch Fire Ring for the Large EGG)and is listed on the website along with the other fire rings:

I concur - that is what I did!!
-
Thanks, I would need a large grate then correct?
-
Correct. The large CI grate is the same size the regular grate for the large and will work just fine at the regular level.
The 2 inch fire ring can also sit on top of the regular fire ring for a slightly raised grid:
I bought mine a couple years ago but do not remember the price. Probably about the same price I paid for my Spider.

Notice in that last photo there is a spider underneath the 2# fire ring. I can put a 13" pizza stone and drip pan on the spider and it works well for stacking two layers of large meat on a home-made raised grid without being too high in the dome, or hitting the thermometer probe.
The main grid is about two inches below the felt level.
All of this is not really necessary... I just like to experiment with different setups. -
I like it

Just to clarify, the original spider would hold the medium 15" inch cast iron grid. The spider leg is 2 inches long.
Early 2008, BGE modified the inside diameter of the large fire ring. Likewise, we had to modify the spider, shorten (1.75") the legs to fit the smaller diameter fire ring. So, now only the BGE 13 inch, small, cast iron grid will fit the revised spider.
