Temp Control

Seems like lately I have had to have the vents (both daisy wheel and bottom) open further to maintain temp. Today cooking ribs had vwents to 350* settings per the photo from Grandpa Grub (I think) to main tain 250* dome. Seems like it has been that way for about the past month. temps are warm 50's in central KY today. Any suggestions? Anyone else notice anything like this?

Buddy, time for a real cleaning out. (if you haven't done that yet.) Remove your firebox and you might find a pile of ash that has been blocking air flow. Clean that out and you should be good. Suggest new lump also.

I have shop vacced everything out several times. Do I need to take parts out besides the lump grate?

I think you may need to take everything (fire box, etc) out of the the egg and clean it out. Ash can get behind everything and restrict air flow. I am not an expert though but do thoroughly clean my eggs out frequently.

In addition to cleaning out, calibrate your dome temps! I finally did my Large and Medium Eggs after 1.5 years and 1 year respectively. One was 30 degrees off and the other 40 degrees! They were both registering cooler. Using my example your supposed 250 could be 290 in reality.
Anyway, it is very easy. Just remove clip and thermometer. Put probe in boiling water. I poked probe through foil and used foil to protect my hands. Worked great. You can use the boiling point calculator if you want to be really accurate. Just click on the cookbook button at top of page and pull down calculator. However, unless you are in the mountains or a very unusual barometric pressure situation 212 works just fine. Anyway, just adjust the nut on the back until it is reading 212 (or whatever).

You might want to check the metal plate that sits at the bottom of the fire box. I have two extra large BGE. One of which is about 3 years old and the other is about a year old. The newer one has smaller holes in the the plate to allow the air to come up from the bottom. This is different from the older version which has larger holes. I talked to the Customer Service at BGE and they said the changed the size of the holes because they were getting alot of complaints that the smaller pieces of coal were falling through. I personally like the bigger holes. I can deal with the loss of the small pieces of lump coal vs getting the temp where I want it.
