How close to the spider/stone can lump be?

I'm going to do my 1st cook w/ my AR and spider tonight. I need to do 2 butts and a brisket. I plan on putting the butts on overnight, and adding the brisket on a lower level of the AR when I wake up tomorrow AM.
However, on past long cooks I've filled lump to the very top, now the spider drops the stone into that area. How close to the stone can I have lump burning?

They can be touching. Sometimes I will start a low and slow cook adn the spider/stone are resting on the lump. As the lump burns to ash the spider then lowers and rests on the fire ring.

Remember you can invert the spider too, which allows for more lump.

I don't know from experience but, I understand you can put you heat deflector on the lower position of the AR as well. Tim
Anyone feel free to correct me. -
never mind!

Grandpa - If I do that, I can't use the AR, right?

Sure can, I do it all the time, in fact, I probably use the spider inverted more than in normal position.
Here is the spider inverted, foiled drip pan and the AR, grid on top level.

"never mind"
That works well too. If I didn't have a spider that is what I would do.

I'm trying to run 3 levels though, drip pan, brisket, butts. But good to know I can run it that way (plate setter replacement).
