Been eggin since August and have only used the fire starter cubes U 2-3 per fire. Have read about Mapp torches and chimneys, and the electric loop. Was wondering what everyone uses and why? Does one method get a stabile fire quicker than the others?

I like mapp gas the best

I have always used mapp gas,

I have the chimney, map gas and the electric starter. I like the electric starter the best. I have electricity wired right into the egg table so it is real easy. The other methods are a good backup. The electric starters only last me about a year, but I cook 5 to 6 time a week.

I concur - I got one for Christmas and it is great.

Oily paper towel for low & slow, weed burner for everything else

The wife gave me an electric starter with my egg. I used it for about a year till it cracked and it worked great. The 5 years since then I've used a torch. I love the speed and the ability to light in multiple places to ensure a good even burn when cooking several burgers or steaks or wings.

If you want very fast hot fire you just can't beat a weed burner. :woohoo:
I use a map for the mini.

Received an electric starter for Christmas, will give it a try. Up to now, I've used a combination of starter sticks and chimney. High winds are a problem for the starter sticks but help the chimney.

I love the propane torch. I purchased mine online through Harbor Freight and it looks just like yours. Got it hooked up to the 20lb propane tank I used to use for my gasser that is adjacent to my Egg. I can light all the charcoal and get it red hot in less than two minutes, or quickly light a small fire for a long cook. Works great either way.
Some people seemed scared or intimidated by it. I don't get it. It is easy to adjust the size of the flame from mini to turbo, whatever you are comfortable with. Always wear eye protection to protect from any stray sparks.
I cant remember when I filled that 20lb tank but I know it has been well over a year and it is still going strong.

I've used electric starters exclusively and find they provide a quick start. I keep several on hand as I usually leave them outside (partially covered) and they sometimes crack.
Putting in an order for the Looftligher today... -

Interresting on the number of comments regarding the longevity of the electrics.
After watchng the Looft, I'm wonderng about my hot air gun. It will ignite the entire house if one is not careful. -
Mine used to range from 2 cooks to maybe 3 months. Then I found the chimney.... Then I got an egg and can't imagine not having a torch. You can make lots of things work, just try as many as possible and use what ya like.

Electric. Hands down.

I've tried a few different ways and have settled on using 91% alcohol purchased at Wal-Mart. A few squirts and then light it and I have a nice fire in 10-15 minutes.
In my opinion, the torches are a bit of overkill. Oil on paper towel sounds like a nice thing to try, but it is messier than the alcohol. Alcohol is cheap and burns fast and clean.Large BGE

I'm very happy with vegetable oil on a paper towel...
I tear one paper towel into quarters... set them over a small bowl (ramekin maybe) and push them down to form a paper bowel... then pour about 1/8 cup oil (maybe more) in and wet the towels... then push the towel pieces down into the charcoal at 12:00, 4:00, 8:00 and in the center and light.
After the paper has burned up (5 minutes) I close the lid and soon have a good fire across the whole coal bed.
I learned this from GG.
