Was supposed to go to some friends and they were going to cook up four lobsters. Their kids got sick and they have been dropped off at our house.

I can simply boil them, but am looking at other options.

Note they are live right now, I am not too worried about ruining them becuase we are not big fans. Any ideas appreciated.

  • not big fans? since you got them for free, you might consider passing them along to someone who IS a big fan.

seriously. don't mean it as an offense, but merely suggest passing along the good favor...

Good point, but at this time I can't think of anyone without plans. While I am not a big fan, the wife and mother in law are.

    I apperciate the thought though.

I was thinking of boiling them and then finishing them off on the egg?
  • No need to boil them at all, take some shears and cut along the top of the shell from head to tail, cut meat almost all the way through and butterly them open. Mix some minced garlic and melted butter and brush that on. (you can also used clarified butter by bringing butter to a boil slowly and then pouring the clarified butter off the top but i just melt butter int he microwave and add a little minced garlic and it is great.

Brush butter and garlic mix on the meat and lay the lobster meat side down on the grill, direct heat. This is only going to take a few minutes so watch them. Turn over when shell is getting pinkish orange and then grill until the thickest part of the lobster is opaque, it’s ready to enjoy. My wife and I love grilled lobster tails this way.

I should have asked but assumed you did not have live lobster but lobster tails.
  • I think boiling them is best and the simplest. I've both broiled(oven) and grilled both split in two and still think boil(pot) is simplest and consistently thebest.

    Hi peid,

Don't give them away! Hahahaha, they are way to good for that, you might learn to love them.
I have found How To Grill Lobsters that has good basic instructions that sound great.

We cooked some forzen lobster tails the other night (Kroger had them on sale)!!

Thawed them in the fridge the day before
removed the shell on the inside and lossened the tailes in the shell (plus added some Dizzy Pig rub)

Cokked the meat side first for about 3 minutes at 350 degrees

the added a little butter insite the shell and cooked shell side down for 7 minutes (or so).

    Man, they were gooooood

Next time, I think I will just remove the meat completely and cool more like big shrimp.

They are live at the moment.

Will likely boil two all the way and do the other two on the grill. Thanks for the recipe and ideas.
  • Just posted this last evening....
Here is the re-post for what ever it's worth!
    Enjoy and Happy New Year!

Sorry...No pics, but I just did lobster this evening.
Here is what I did and it turned out well.

2 med. Rock lobster tails, frozen
    1 t. olive oil and 1 t. butter, melted
    1 t. lemon juice
    1/2 t. grated orange peel / zest
Pinch / dash of ground ginger, aromic bitters and chili powder

Thaw Rock Lobster tails and cut off the thin undershell with scissors. Bend tailback to crack shell to prevent curling.
Combine melted butter, oil, lemon juice, orange peel, ginger, bitters and chili powder; brush over lobster meat.
Cook on grill, direct, over HOT coals (450 F.)with meat side up for 5 to 10 minutes. Brush again with sauce, turn shell side up, brush the shell with sauce and cook about 5 minutes longer or until meat has lost its transparency and is opaque. Serve immediately.

These are live animals...don't subject them to a slow death...even though they aren't intelligent creatures, they still feel pain. Simply par boil for 5 minutes, then split, or whatever you choose to do, and finish on the Egg. Much more humane.
  • Didn’t catch the “live” part on the first go-round!!!
LC has it right! Rolling, boiling water for a short pre-boil first!
Don’t smoke them to death on the Egg first…Smoke them after death!
