We started soaking the beans last night so, this morning I drained the water and refilled with the ham bone from Christmas! :P The whole house smells wonderful. I can't wait until tonight to get a bowel. Yum yum ! Eat um up! :P Tim

Tim I did the same thing 2 days after Christmas.
Standing rule: I get the bone anywhere I sent hamSalado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Plus a couple Pit Boss Pellet Smokers. -
Little Freudian slip there?
Ham & Bean soup is one of my favorite post holiday meals -- too bad I didn't do a ham this year -
Rod, your comment was so much better than the one I was going to post.
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

You mean Bowel Soup? Undercooked chicken might help with that.

Good Grief.. -
Tim, I do that cook often and is one of my faves. I took a Ham shank out of the freezer this morning to go in Black Eyed Beans, I mean peas.. :ermm:

Very fitting ending to a ham cook. Looks Great. There is going to be some good eating at your house tonight. Now make some potato rolls to go with it.
BTW, the left over soup freezes very well. Shelagh and I put in smaller bags and drop the bags in boiling water to heat and serve. Easy lunch and dinner.

Thanks Kent.
I did search for the rolls and found your post. I'll see about making them today! :P
Thanks again. Tim
Here is the link to the potato rolls if anyone else wants them.

Hey Tim,
The soup looks great no matter what you choose to eat it out of.

I got the bone and wanted to give this a try. Can you give me any recipe you might have used.
Times for the beans? and for the ham bone?
Thanks. -
Love ham and bean soup Looks great

We have a Honey-Baked ham (with bone) someone brought just begging to be tossed into a pot. I'm off to get some beans and we'll be cooking ham-n-beans tomorrow. Great idea.

Hey Laker, Click on this link and I went with Celtic Wolf's recipe. Tim
I have been simmering the soup about six hours.
I am also going to make the potato rolls that Grandpas Grub told me about.

You will love the soup. Don't trim, just toss the entire amount of bone and ham you have left. If you have much of the glaze left on the bone your soup will be a bit a little sweet, don't worry about it, just add some salt if it is too sweet.
Give it a good long slow cook when the bone speperates from the meat you are getting close but it won't hurt to cook longer. The water will change from clear to dark and that is when the flavors have developed.
You can pull the bones and stiff out of the soup, but I would leave it all there and just serve, keeping the bone out of the served bowls, don't skip on some of those larger chunks of ham in the servings. Leaving the bone will continue to add flavor to the cook.
If you have left overs that are going into the fridge or freezer, remove the bone, skin and hunks of fat. Second day is better than the first.
Making soup is one of the best parts of cooking a ham.
