Thermometer hit my food!!!

It was frustrating, because I went to smoke a turkey and what I didn't realize is that the eggs thermometer lodged itself into the turkey.

I have a large egg and smoked an 18 lb. turkey. I didn't set it on top of the grill, just the indirect platesetter.

How can you avoid this? my turkey was over done after 3 hours!!!

  • Loosen your thermometer on the inside next time. Then if it hits your turkey, you just pull it outward till it is not touching. That or possibly turn your bird a bit to one side. Don't feel bad, we have all done that one.
  • Great advice! Thanks!
  • if the dome thermo was lodged in your turkey, didn't you notice that the "dome temp" was awful low?

one of the things you need to test when you cook a turkey or a lot of pork butt or anything oversized, is that you have clearance.

but even when we miss that, it's still hard not to notice that the egg temp is awfully (strangely) low.

if my dome said "105 degrees" (or something similar) after formerly being at 350 just before putting the turkey in, i'd suspect something was wrong
