i guess it sounds easy to those more tech savy then me. But, i do not have an airport express. Do I need to get one for this to work?
What i have is a Fios high speed connection and a wireless router/network set up in my home. We have a Dell a Mac desktop and a macpro laptop. The macs and our wii and xbox all set themselves up right out of the box were very simple. -
thanks,
i take it you need to configure that wireless bridge or something like that? -
I believe you will. I need to re-read past posts on this subject. But, from what I recall, its not too difficult. You just need hardwire each component and figure out the IP address of each....but let me re-read past posts tomorrow and I'll link those for you, because I'll definitely need to figure it out at some point.

so if my thinking is correct, i would need a wireless bridge connected to the
stoker. That bridge would need to be configured to get the ip address. once that bridge and stoker have access to my home network(ie router) i can access the stoker via a web connection? -
thanks much appreciated!

I put two 9.5lb butts on tonight(Mon)at 10:15pm. 250dome. No Guro or Stoker. I will check it before bed at midnight, then check it when I awake at 7:30. I have no reason to believe the temp will fluctuate until the cook is done around noonish.

From your post above you only need a CAT5 or CAT6 cable from the stoker to the router.
If you want to go wireless then you will need either a wireless bridge, AirPort, or access point buy the egg to connect the stoker into.

...and that is the easiest way to get the meat cooked.

If that was me putting those butts on, I would have had to get out of bed, put on my winter coat, and trudged through the snow to check on things at midnight. A Stoker saves me those steps. As I mentioned before, the logging software is also very informative.
My car has cruise control, but that does not mean that I cannot drive it without it.
Looking at it another way, you don't need an Egg to cook any of the things we cook on our Eggs. A guy with a WSM could post on every thread on this forum that an Egg is not needed to do whatever cook the thread is about, and that his WSM could cook it. Then another guy with a stickburner could point out that all us wimps who use lump charcoal instead of real wood for fuel are cheating  .

stones,
This is another write up that SkySaw did, which I think explains the set up really well. http://www.eggheadforum.com/index.php?option=com_simpleboard&func=view&id=751880&catid=1#
Also, the link he posted further up has a good explanation as well...especially this post. http://www.eggheadforum.com/index.php?option=com_simpleboard&func=view&id=770588&catid=1
If you are setting up the Stoker to a mac, then his write up is perfect for you. I'm using a PC, so I'll just be using a wireless router and a bridge, rather than the Airport Extreme and Airport Express (I'm guessing that's the apple's router and bridge).
It sounds difficult, but I don't think it will be. I think its just configuring your router to identify the bridge and stoker. which shouldn't be too bad. -
Ouch!
