Skip lump and burn woodchunks

Does/has anyone skipped burning lump as a primary fuel and burned small chunks of firewood for a primary fuel?
I am thinking of use the lump to get a coal bed but chunks of maple as a primary fuel.
I get maple by the loggers cord to heat the house, and it seems quite a waste of cash by comparison to pay a buck a pound for lump when maple is .27 cents per pound.

It`s been talked about here and I think the result was too much ash and too much smoke flavour.

Make your own lump with the maple. Fire it up and get it fully engulfed, then close the vents and come back the next morning. We do that with mequite all the time..You must master temp, smoke, and time to achive moisture, taste, and texture! Visit www.bubbatim.com for BRISKET HELP

I'm not sure you could control temps well enough to make it work for low and slows. The wood is to dense to keep an even burn with limited air intake. Let us know how it works out. twww.ceramicgrillstore.com ACGP, Inc.

you can't burn wood as hot as you can lump....
seems counterintuitive, but it's the truth.
and your ash production will quickly become a problem.
there's a reason stone age man made charcoal insteada just using wood. -
that's true....
i'm sure most folks here have found that their unused wood chunks have become charcoal after they shut down.
it looks 'burnt' (as in 'used up') but isn't.
