I live in a small town where Egg supplies are not available. Does anyone have a suggestion for good place on-line to order some Starter Cubes?

Thanks for your help,
Vanzo

Easier yet...go to a hardware store and buy the handstarter MAPP or propane canisters. They usually run about 30 bucks and last 4-6 months or longer...then just buy replacement canisters....

    I like the cubes also.

Thanks, but I really like the cubes. I can stick a couple down into the lump, sit and enjoy an adult beverage, and the fire is ready to go.

    I'm very lazy!!

Thank you VERY much. That is considerably cheaper than the Egg brand. I will order some today.

  • We buy the Diamond Strike-A-Fire starters. Each box has 8 long sticks (the length of the box) and then we break those into pieces which are exactly the same size as the BGE cubes.

We find them at our Albertsons for less than $3 a box.

30 second hit with the MAPP torch you are back to your adult beverage.

But if you insists a simple google search for "fire starter cubes" will give any number of choices and you won't need to leave your chair.
  • Like Kim said, go with the mapp torch. Easier and quicker. The cubes take longer, the mapp gets your fire up much quicker. And who doesn't like playing around with a mapp blowtorch...It'll light a cigarette in a hurry.
  • I got a small box of starter cubes with my egg. When those ran out, I got a BIG box from our local ace hardware store. They're in the same section as the pressed-chip firewood logs. That box lasted for several months. If you've got an Ace or True Value nearby, they can probably order them for you, if they don't already carry them.

Once that bigger box ran out, I tried the oil/paper towel trick that I had read about here on the forum. It requires about 10 seconds more time, is less expensive, and lights the egg in the same amount of time as the chips. Just fold a paper towel in half, drizzle (don't drench it) it with cooking oil, then roll it up and twist it. Drop a couple in the egg and light each end. They burn away faster than the cubes, but still do a great job of lighting the lump.
  • I am all for the Diamond - Strike a fire strips. I break each into three pieces and light them in different spots when starting the egg. Works great.

This weekend, I saw a friend who used MAPP though and looks to be a really good idea, without the smoke the starter cubes/strips cause sometimes.
  • I have tried the oiled paper towel method multiple times, and it never works for me. The towels burn, sure, but no lump ever gets going. Maybe it's my cheap paper towels...So I use the starter cubes, too (whatever brand I can find, not just BGE). While I have a torch w/MAPP gas, it's fiddly. I like the light-cube-and-walk-away aspect.

I recently bought some Western brand firestarter "cubes" at Ace Hardware. Didn't like them at all. First, they weren't cubes. They may have been when first packaged, but they had all fused together into one big lump. After I pried/cut them apart (they crumble), they were much harder to light than the BGE cubes. Oh, they worked, but....

So, next time I was in Ace, I bought a box of Rutland SafeLite cubes. They look (and smell) identical to the BGE cubes, even the box is the same size, but I haven't tried them yet.

And I may never try them, because the next day, I went to Lowe's and somehow found myself leaving there with a MAPP torch. That instant on trigger is cool! Using it tonight for the first time. :)

Ditto on the mapp. I wasnt't much of a believer either until I bought one. I'd part with a lot of toys before I parted with my mapp. What I like is going outside and hitting it in about 4 places with the mapp and getting 700 in about 12 minutes. You will not be doing that with starter cubes!
  • Can't find MAPP and the yellow can of propane with the self-igniting torch is about $50....can you show a pic of what you purchased, please? ;)
  • had a bit of a time trying that method at the Colorado Eggfest Pre Meet & Greet, too

It's not really MAPP as they don't seem to sell that any more. Bought it at Lowe's for $46 and change. Used it for the first time tonight. More convenient and faster than starter cubes.

Plus, I can use it for plumbing! :) I hate plumbing.

    Michael,
Next time you want a high temp cook, hit the lump in about 3 places with that torch for about 15 to 20 seconds each. That thing will take off like a rocket.

Yep, I plan to. Tonight was the first use of the torch and I was going for 350 for chicken thighs. Next time I do steak or pizza though..... :)
