Best Egg Seal

Looking for input on the best seal material for my Egg. I have replaced my seal with felt but it burns at the very high temp. I use for searing staeks. I have been told there are other materials that work better than the felt.

Nomex or a Rutland Gasket. I'm sure others will go more into detail about them, but Nomex is a fire retartdant material used in fire fighter and race car driver suits. The Rutland gasket is a fire place gasket that alot of people like, but it does have fiberglass in it that seems to concern some people.

Cotronics 395-81PS. Woven ceramic fiber self adhesive tape. I just installed last Sunday and am very impressed. I'm guessing it will last several years or more. Bubba Tim and PBM swear by them and from what I can tell so far, I agree.

i use a rutland secured with high temp (automotive) gasket sealant.
coltronics makes a ceramic fiber gasket as well.
the egg is so airtight that it hisses for a half-second as i shut it, as the fire struggles to suck in air -
are the fibers anything like the rutland ? i.e. like fiberglass?
not sure why some folks freak re: the rutland and fibers, but not he coltronics. just because it's eramic doesn't mean it's "safer" than fiberglass, if both fibers are similar and friable etc.
doesn't "the competition" use coltronics? -
I have replaced my felt gasket with nomex, and it seems to hold up quite well during pizza cooks on my large egg. The Smoking Guitar Player has a series (3) of instructional videos on gasket replacement. Try this link:

I don't have any experience with the Rutland, but yes. When the gasket was first applied, there are "loose" fibers, but a couple of cooks and they seem to have all but dissappeared. I'm not worried about a few loose microscopic ceramic fibers and it's not like the food comes into contact with it and I aint lickin it neither. haha

i havent had gaskets for years and thats been fine by me, have not had any problems with temp control. now if i were to put one on it would be either the rutland or coltronics and it would be adhered with the rutland cement or coltronics thermeez ceramic putty. ive used the sticky back versions on the rutland and they fail around 900 degrees on extended cooks and i do cook that high. i would assume the coltronics sticky backs would fail around the same temps as well but dont know for sure. now some dont go extreme on the high heats or its just for a short sear and then back the heat down, for them the nomex would work fine, the felts are worthless
fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it -
Choke a hot fire and it sounds like a small jet engine.

i'm not worried either. it's just been mentioned in the past as an alternative to the rutland because folks have said it's "safer". well... the fibers are what are important, not the materials they are made of.
so, although i'm a rutland user, i'm saying that if someone fears the fiberglass rutland, the ceramic fiber coltronics isn't necessarily safer just because it is ceramic fiber. i think they're assuming that gee the egg is ceramic, so the gasket must be fine.
that said, though, id P or one of the other competitors has tested it and it's literally "approved" then no worries on all counts, right?
for me the auto gasket adhesive was the stuff that really proved itself. is the adhesive tape on the coltronics better than other "pre-taped" gaskets we've had before? -
yours do that too?
i've mentioned it a few times but no one's ever said "mine too" -
Like I mentioned in our email, I filled the egg with lump and let it rip for hours. The gasket held tight and the heat seems to have hardened the adhesive. The gasket is very secure.

Yup, and it taught me to give great respect to a powerful fire and the simple but strong desire it has for air. I just stand back and watch the fire shoot out the screen.
Not a good time to be peekin. -
i musta been drinking. didn't remember that...

Thanks my E-Head friends for your responces. If your suggestions don't work I'm going to two layers of fire bricks cemented together with epoxy mixed with fiberglass and asbestos. Thanks again.
