heritage turkeys

I have the opportunity to purchase either a blue slate or white holland heritage turkey from a local farmer.

I remember hearing or reading that heritage turkeys aren't really as tasty as what we've come to expect from supermarket turkeys. Not as much white meat either, which is what my family likes.

I'm wondering if this is worth the expense ($9 a pound) and if so, which of the 2 breeds I should order. Any advice?

fyi, the White Holland is one of the true heritage birds and not the cross that is often confused with the original heritage turkey.

Gwen, I bought one once and will never do it again. The white meat was OK but the dark was full of tendons and inedible. -RP

we get a double breasted white holland every year, great flavor but this year they are 3.09 a pound which i find expensive, 9 is crazy. the farm we get them from has alot of breast meat but not all farms are the same and this ones been raising their own strain for some time now. best bang for the buck is a frozen kosher empire in the supermarket. i always cook two birds for tday, one holland and one empire, the holland gets cooked in the egg. heres where we get them local, very wide breasted
