Cast iron from in-laws
Bash
Posts: 1,011
Mother in law was clearing out her garage, and knew I would make a good home for her old cast iron.
The large (deep) skillet was her grandmother's (my wife's great grandmothers). She said it her grandmother fried chicken most Sundays back in the day. The two smaller skillets are just 20 years old or so. I'm sure I'll put them all to good use.

Richard,
It was nice to meet you and your family yesterday. Thanks for taking the time to talk with me and show me around. I appreciate the Wicked Good lump. Let me know if there is anything I can do for you. I hope to see you again. -
Great heirloom Richard, hope you don't need to cut the handle to fit the large.

That's a great score.
I suspect in another 40 years or so, the little man in in the picture will be saying "yeah, I've been cooking on cast iron all my life".Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery -
Never can have to many of those things. They are great.
-
Ron,
Thanks - glad you got it. I've already started using mine. :cheer:

Frying chicken is one of those things I've never done. Just not worth the cleanup inside, and not something I'd try on the egg.
I have done french fries in a small amount of oil in a cast iron skillet on the egg. That came out great, with the wife and kids all asking for more.

Bill,
Likewise - it was great to meet you. Doing this lump pallet was good - cheaper prices, plus getting to meet folks from the forum!

I've got the XL - no handle cutting for me!
I love my XL - use it all the time. I know the forum consensus is the large, but I really like the versatility of the XL. Cooked veggies on it tonight - used tjv's lump reducing ring, with a BGE pizza stone to give me good indirect heat in the XL for lots of beets and zucchinis.

I hope so. My dad still uses his, and I like mine. Hopefully my kids will appreciate cooking as much as I do. (Even though I am a rank amateur compared to many on this forum).
-
I agree - virtually indestructible. I'm looking forward to many years using them.
-
Indeed. I was eying buying a smaller one, glad I don't have to now.
-
just don't try this at home :woohoo:

Very cool! I'm trying to get my fathers old cast iron. That's so cool that it has been handed down. Sent an email earlier.

I have a ten or eleven inch cast iron frying pan that was my grandmother's - and I'm a grandmother now myself! I asked my mother for it when I moved into my first apartment as a college student. She couldn't understand why I wanted it. She warned me that I'd never use it because it was too large!
It hangs from the rack over my butcher block counter, along with several smaller ones, and I take it down almost daily. They are just wonderful. Congratulations on getting one with a history; that makes it so much nicer, doesn't it? -
Great score!! Those will be a grerat addition for you.Molly

Richard,
Did the handsome young man in the pic help you clean them up, they look to be in great shape.

Late in posting this message, but after looking at the picture I had to say you have several wonderful gifts there. I love the story and composition of the photo. Maybe one day that little guy will be posting here with his Egg(s) and those very same cast iron pans. "Teach your children well..."
