Mark was asking earlier about cooking papa murphys pizzas on the BGE...well it reminded me with my first EGGperience with Papa's pizza.

I was very late in getting home from work one night and wanted to go to the gym too. So I did and by then it was pushing 8 pm so I stopped in Papa Murphys for pizza thinking it would be nice to 'have somone else' cook dinner since it was so late.

I ordered up my pizza, paid, watched them make it and then watched them wrap it in plastic and as they handed it to me I said, like an idiot, aren't you going to cook it for me? His reply, we don't have ovens...I fired right back, for $12 this thing should be cooked...I had NO IDEA IN THE WORLD that this was a carry out, cook it yourself pizza place, had never heard of them before.

Embarrassed I drove home fired up the egg and cooked my pizza (about 9:30 that night. Oh well. I guess I missed the invention of carryout cook it yourself pizza.

Hard for me to get a grip on it as well. I thought this was the whole reason for going out. You don't want to cook. Hard for me to buy one for 12 I have to cook when dominos sells larges here for 5.99 all day everyday. Several people at work say they are great. Just cant make myself do it.

They are not great; they are exactly what you would think they are...overpriced and with about a third the ingredients you would put on one you make at home. Frankly they have less ingredients than some I have bought out at restaurants even. I don't understand the business model and I don't see a line of cars out their door.

However, the unit price (cost) of pizza about ten years ago for Domino's was about $1.50 of which $.33 was the box and advertising, so maybe the model works with those kinds of margins. Not great, average at best; add in the cooking hastle and it's not worth stopping in to buy. My Two Cents...

  • Tony,

Thanks for that info. With the talk it gets here I would have walked right into one for lunch when I am travelling.
