Hello, first I'm new to the BGE. I purchased a used large from a guy for $100.00 but it needs a few things. It has the older sissor type rings on it, the draft door is steel and relly hard to open and the firebox has a crack in it. Should i use the firebox as is (see pic). Just wanted to know if this was a good purchase?? thanks for any help.[/img]

It's a great deal. The firebox is fine.

Im not a big fan of renovating the older eggs, but for $100 you can't go wrong. I agree with Pat about the firebox, should not be a problem but a replacement would be nice. The draft door appears ok to me.
Congrats, thats a very good find! -
Don't think you went wrong for $100. Can buy a new screened vent if you want to

that is a terrible deal you got hosed big time.. i feel so bad for you .. where are you located?? out of the goodness of my heart i will give you $125..
fire box is fine, mine was in 7 pieces and still worked i only replaced it because it did not do well in travel to competitions. fishlessman, i believe, has a 9 piece fire box that works quite well. lucky day for you.

I'd have bought it for $100 provided the outside shell wasn't cracked.

Outstanding buy. Put some lump in that bruiser and put some chicken on it - you did mightyfine. Spray the DFMT with some Pam and put it in the Egg during the cool down after your first cook and it will be like new. The firebox is fine. I would order the new screened but use as is until the new one comes.

That is a great deal! As for the hinge just loosen the bolts a touch and WD 40 the hinging areas. I have one older than that and it still has the old hinge. They are a little harder to open than the new spring hinges but you could always up grade the hinge. You could have paid a lot more, overall it looks to be in decent shape. Nice find and welcome to the Egg world.

Looks like a good buy. Unless you have a fire looks like the dome thermo needs to be adjusted. Bottom vent and cast iron grate would be good upgrades but I'd just start cooking and enjoy, upgrade later.

You done good!!
Congratulations and welcome to the club! -
You scored a home run. Is this your first egg? Where are you located? How did you find the egg?
-
nice work!.... i'd buy three of these cash for clunkers... lol

A cracked egg would be a hazard when doing a high temp cook, such as a nice hand tossed pizza

You did great! I have one just like this and it's a great Egg.
Do yourself a big favor and spring for a new stainless steel bottom vent with the screen. It will be easier to use and safer.
When you open it up, be sure to pop one of the hinges past the open point a bit so the lid won't close accidentally and break something. The hinge on one side should have a little ring that you can pull the hinge with.
Down the road you may want to rehab or replace the nest.
