While we're talking Dutch Ovens...

What size DO would fit for 2 people? I'm thinking about getting one but don't must recipes call for a 12" dutch oven? Most of the dutch ovens i've seen in pics look huge.. Do you guys normally use them for just 2 or 3 people? I dunno, it seams like a "regular" sized dutch oven would be too large to cook for just 2 people. TIA!

I just bought a 4-quart Lodge DO a couple weeks ago.
-
Have you had a chance to use it yet?
-
yes...to make a small batch of red mole sauce.

Since it was a small batch, I didn't want to try to use a big dutch oven, I would've needed more fat to fry the chiles and other ingredients. So a smaller batch needed a smaller pot, and I didn't have anything in that size that I use on the egg...if I'd used my regular pots, I would've had to fry all those chiles inside...not a good thing for the respiratory system.

I have a Five and a three qt lodge and I cook for only two 95% of the time. The 5qt is a good size. It fits on my small and is just right for a pot roast or chilli with some leftovers.

Looks good. Never made mole sauce before. To be honest, i'm not even sure what mole sauce is. so many things in life i've never done. Seriously, is that just guacamole sauce?
-
Thanks, i'll see if i can check out the 5qt at my local Bass Pro shops. Do you normally just cut must recipes in half or something when cooking on the smaller DO?
-
You don't have to eat it all at one time
I have a 3 1/2 and a 5 1/2 and use both for the two of us. I just mad 5 1/2 qts. of Chili. It will last us a month. -
To be honest with DO cooks I use recipes as a suggestion. I don't bake a lot because I don't like to measure.

I have a five qt. and a seven qt. I use the five the most, ( couple of times a week)we eat a lot of chili, beans, soups, etc, particularly in the winter.
For me, it is the perfect size, I can use smaller recipies for the two of use, still big enough for bigger cooks when the kids come over.

Er...not quite.
Mole just means "sauce". I think guacamole means "avocado sauce".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mole_sauce
The sauces referred to as moles (red mole, green mole, black mole, poblano mole, etc etc etc) are generally complex sauces made with many ingredients. They are traditional mexican sauces.

My mistake, it was a 2 quart pot, not a 4 quart.
-
And they are very, very good!!

The DO that BGE sells is a 5qt. Lodge nakes a 4qt as well as larger sizes. The thing about a DO, ya don't have to fill it up.

I absolutely love Mole. Have mixed mole sauce w/shredded pork butt and White hominy...mmmmm My wife is half mexican and had it that way growing up.
The mole sauce I really like is one I had in Mexico City. It was very very thick and had a taste almost like Chocolate. Very unique flavor. Only had it once in the States, and it was made by a Engineer from Mexico that moved here years ago.. -
That looks like the mole sauce I had in Mexico that tasted like Chocolate.

AHH.... you know after reading posts this past week or so about "mole" sauce, i thought it was like egghead lingo for guacamole seauce.. How silly of me. :side: :silly: :woohoo:

I think you and a couple people said the 5qt works well for just a couple people. Might have to go check one out. Thanks!

As mentioned, the 5qt Lodge is just about right. I use mine often.
Also, I recently got one of those little 2qt ones that someone showed in a pic I believe, and I love it. It is on sale at Lodge Factory Stores right now for $19, if you happen to be in the Southeast. Not sure it is worth the $29 at Bass Pro, but they do have the 5qt units for $39 which is a good deal. They have both the wire bail handle unit and the 2-loop handle unit.
Worth noting is that the lid for the 5qt DO's also fit the 10-1/4 Lodge skillet...and it does come in handy.
