How am I supposed to stack charcoal?

I see numerous reference to stacking the charcoal for a long cook. How exactly?
Am I trying to get as dense a pack as I can (Tetris), or am I trying to run layers parallel to each other with alternating layers?

3Pedals6Speeds,
If you look at Elder Wards pulled pork method in recipes, there is a good explanation. As I remember he only went to the top of the firebox, that should be fire ring. The idea is just to allow airflow through the lump for an overnight cook.

What does your handle mean?

It's a reference to my car (actually former car) When I was out on the car geek forums years ago I needed a username, so I went with the one I have as my car a the time was a 6 Speed manual. I started using it there, and now it's me whatever board I'm on. Haven't run across another person using it (yet).
