Wasabi?

My understanding about the wasabi most of us buy is it's horseradish with green dye. Has anyone had real wasabi and how does it compare to horseradish??? Hotter??? or???

Was thinking of mixing it into the cream cheese for ABT's. Yes, could use h'radish but was wondering if it would be different.

Thanks,

Bordello

True wasabi will probably not be available to the consumer unless you have access to an importer. It is found only in a few places in Japan and is highly prized. To use it, it should be ground on a shark skin coated panel to be used in the true Japanese way. Mahasaru Morimoto on Iron Chef insists on this as the way to prepare wasabi.

You should be able to get the paste. As eggsakley said it's tough to find the fresh Wasabi. I found the paste in my local WalMart*

Bordello....You can find FINE quality wasabi powder in your Asian Markets....It is not expensive, but not inexpensive either. Go for it, and buy the more expensive brand. It is worth it. ;) If you have to buy a package you find too large, you can simply freeze it in a ziplock, and it will be good for a couple years. ;) (Do NOT buy the premixed tube stuff.... :S ) It only takes a bit of water...add just a bit of water to the powder at a time... until you get a decent consistency...like stiff mashed potatoes. :)
Wasabi will lite your sinuses up if not used in moderation. It won't burn your mouth, but incredible on the sinuses!!! AWESOME when you have a head cold!!! :woohoo:  Wish you the best! :)

    Hi Michelle,
I'm always hoping you will chime in so I thank you. Do most Asian markets cover both Chinese and Japanese foods??? Or do I need a Japanese market??? You can tell I don't get out much. :(

Hope all is well out there in swamp country. ;)

Bordello....If it is an "Asian" Market that has any worth, it will have ingredients from many areas of Asia, to include Japan, Korea, Thailand, etc...etc...
If you do not see the wasabi powder...ASK. "Wasabi" is universal....LOL. You'll find it with ease. :);)

Bordello....You are more than welcome. ;) And this gives me the opportunity to add....there is a very fine and potent brand that comes in a can....sort of like cocoa powder. Pop the top, use what you need, and replace the top securely. Stays fresh for a LONG time. Much preferred to me over bagged brands....
    Keep me posted!!! ;)

  • Bruce, just recently (in the last 2 yrs) a farm in Oregon has been able to figure out how to grow true wasabi. I have only seen it in specialty stores on the west coast, and it is still very expensive. I have not tried it but some of the nicer sushi spots here in LA serve it.

Bordello, it is a bit of a hike for you from Gold Canyon, but you should check out Lee Lee Oriental Supermarket in Chandler. They have a huge selection of all types of Asian products, plus fresh fish, meats, and poultry. Here is a link if you ever get out that way:

I go there at least twice a month and load up, but I am much closer than you. - Scott
