Need Ideas to Buy Dutch Oven

I would like to buy a dutch oven to cook with on the Egg. I would like to cook roasts, stew, chili, spaghetti sauce and cobbler. Should I buy an enameled dutch oven?

Any Dutch oven that fits will work.

Look at my "Gumbo" thread below. Its just a standard cast iron. I like it better than enameled. However I have several La Creuset pots and cassarol pans that I like better than cast. But for a DO I like the old cast iron.

I have several, both plain and enameled. I use my enamel ones more because of the quick clean-up factor but you can't beat CI either way.

Yes, certain acidic recipes can leave metallic tastes that certain people can taste when cooking in cast iron. You or yours might be one of them and there is nothing cast can do that enameled can't in my opinion.

You can get the 6qt Lodge Enameled unit for $65 online from Walmart. Thats just a tad bit more than a reg CI of same size.
Looks like the brown one is $58, that's a great price.

All good advice, I have a CI DO and it performs well. Fankly it's personal preference and how much gingle you want to part with.

Enamel doesn't get ruined in the Egg enviornment? Smoke etc comes off easily ? If so, would be the only way to go.....?????

buy the lodge enamel mentioned or go to a marshals and see what they have for enamelled. ive got the regular cast, love it for certian dishes, the marshals cheap enamel, and expensive lecruestes, love them all. the expensive french one is overkill for use in an egg, its better if you have a high end stove with a simmer plate, but for an egg the low priced marshals version is just as good. sportsmans guide online usually has some as well.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

I've had no harm done to my enameled pots in the egg.

if you decide on a cast iron DO, stop by your local flea market or antique mall and see if you can buy an old one cheap. may need to be nuked and re-seasoned, but easily done in return for saving some bucks.

Enameled CI is still CI.
