Trying to re-slice thick cut bacon
Bordello
Posts: 5,926
For those that have followed my botched ABT thread using Safeway thick cut bacon whitch does not work all that well for me. It was a 3 lb. pak so I have a lot left.
Oh what to do??? :(
I'll try this.
Put the bacon in the freezer for abou an hour or so, had to cut about 2 inches off the lenght to make it fit without extending beyond the blade in the start of the cut.
Even though the bacon is thick sliced I am able to slice it again but may have a few slices thinner then the others. Sure am thankful for my low end Chef's choice slicer.
So I will try the ABT's again very soon.
Cheers,
Bordello

Great info and thanks. My problem is I don't like a lot of salt (except in my beer
:cheer: ) The safeway bacon is what my sis told me to try and I do like it. Also it was a 3 lb pack. :( I will try the think sliced after this.
There is a learning curve making these. :(
Butt,
I will keep at it.

they get better the more you try them

then all of your friends want them then they are work!!! i made 200 one night (with some help) have not made them volintarily since
one of my friends that helped me. he and his wife come over for dinner every month or so. and his wife loves them. i actually hand the utensils to him and i make him do the prep. i put them on the egg and everyone tells me what a great job i do :woohoo:
also one thing to buy for low $$$ is a grapefruit spoon use it to scrape membrane and seeds

Bente, yes about the grapefruit spoon, I was searching earlier but was not sure whitch tool it was.
Do you like em cold as well??? Also, do you prefer doing em as boats (each half wrapped in bacon or the 2 halves put together and then wrapped)???
Stems on for handles or off???
Sorry for all the question, did some reading on em but till ya try for yourself ya don't really know.

Dale,
Do you have much eggsperience with these??? I know I'm having some trouble as I have not really done em before.
I'm still kind of liking the idea of cutting off the stem end and cleaning the seeds/veins out and fillng with a jerky gun. No slitting em.
Sounds like you better start early and or get some help.
Best of luck to ya on that one.

Got it all cut,now will try ABT's again soon.

In the spirit of trying to appease the "Princess", I tried making ABT's using turkey bacon - NOT ! SInce it is compressed processed turkey, it would not wrap. It would split and come apart.
Also found that the tool for making melon balls works good for cleaning out the peppas.
Why don't you get one of your "babes" to help with making the ABT's - that should make it a lot less of a hassle.
Good luck, Bordello. -

Ohhh Clark and just how do you propose he ask her???
I am not going to even touch this one since I am one of the ones that gave him such a hard time about his pics
just run a few sentences through your head???

Hey Bordello, good job on using the slicer to make the bacon thinner. I just bought the same one and am going to slice some buckboard now.
ABT's are good and worth the trouble, you just have to get the hang of it. I have made them several ways, but it is easier to cut them in half, leaving the stem on one half. I use a whole piece of bacon and wrap them around several times - no toothpick.

Hi Faith,
Thanks, I needed that. I did freeze the bacon for an hour or so before cutting and did a slow feed of the bacon into the blade.
Looks like you did your's on Miss Mini and direct, if so any problems with flare ups???
Thanks,
Bordello -
Thanks for both tips, great ideas. I also heard/read grapefruit spoons work well for the seeds and veins.
As for my babes, hell anything I can get them involved with is good to me. :woohoo:
 Love my ladies.
Have a great weekend,

Yes, I do mine on the mini. I usually cook them at 350 - 400, havent had a problem with flare ups. I like mine to get real crispy.

WOW,
Good for you, I would have thought that being so close to the lump it would be too hot direct.
Thanks Faith,

I use a strawberry core, one swipe seeds and veins gone.I have made up to 75 at a time so 150 might be ok.I set a fan behind me for the fumes-seems to help.

I will be going out to the local kitchen store to see what they have very soon.

Talking of ABTs. At the Springfield fest someone made them with pepperjack cheese instead of cream cheese.
