Removing old gasket......
EGGARY
Posts: 1,222
The gasket on the XL is going and will have to replace bottom as well as top. I have seen how to take off the gasket with acetone and a scraper. Is it o.k. to use gasket remover to take off the adhesive ? Or would it ruin the EGG ?
Thanks.
Gary
Thanks.

I would just use a razor scraper and the acetone. When getting started I just used the torch to heat up the gasket a little and scrape, heat and scrape until the bulk is off and then just keep scraping and cleaning with razor and the acetone. You won't get it white like new but you can get it pretty clean that way. Just don't heat too much at once.

Gasket stripper may be too agressive and the overspray could damage surrounding surfaces. Go with scraper and acetone.

John at BGE told me not to use gasket remover, or like chemicals. The chemical will absorb into the ceramics and make it hard for the adhesive and new gasket to adhere.
Rather than acetone, use 91% alcohol and a razor (window paint scraper). Don't gouge the ceramic.
. scrape off the existing gasket, don't worry about getting it completly clean.
. use a rag, I use auto shop paper towls about $2 a roll at an automotive store or wallmart. Pour some alcohol on the surface in about a 8 or 10 inch length. Let the alcohol soak but not evaporate. Put some alcohol on the scraper & rag to clean that 8" spot. Work yourself around the egg. You can leapfrog soak one area while cleaning the previous area.
After I had the dome removed it took about 20 minutes to fully clean both surfaces on the large.
Another method is to use a torch to heat the surface and use the scraper to clean. Then follow up with alcohol.
As a last step use the acetone to do a final clean on the surface.

Thanks I have always heard to use acetone. Freds music and BBQ in Reading has a video of this and putting on the Nomex gasket

If it is still the same video, yes, he does use acetone as does the information that comes with the replacement gasket.
The way Fred's assistant is applying the acetone makes cleaning the surface very ineffective and slow. Work in 8 to 10 inch sections and let the acetone or alcohol do it's work on the adhesvie.
All as I can say as spend $1.79 and get a quart of 91% alcohol (Isopropyl) and compare Isopropyl against acetone and see what you like. With some problems and testing I have replaced 9 gaskets, use 91% alcohol and make your life easier.
