BostonButt Tailgate question

I was going to cook a butt and then bring it to my tailgate party in Athens. Has anyone ever cooked on on an egg, and then reheated on a small tailgate grill before shredding? Any ideas on how I could cook on BGE the day before, and then transport it to my tailgate part and cook it that evening?

    If I were you, I'd shred at home and put in a zip bag or seal a meal bag. At the tailgate reheat in a pot with a little coca cola to keep it moist. It will taste just fine.
  • I agree with Bobbyb, I would shred it the night before. The only thing I would do different, (and what I have done in the past with great success), is put it in a crock pot to keep it hot. You can also serve it out of the crock pot. (we have power at our tailgates). Good luck, Bucky Buckshot

    For tailgates, I like to hold the butts foiled in a cooler or a 170 degree oven, then a cooler, and shred onsite.

    I saw Chris Lilly present a butt once by placing it on a baking sheet and squashing it with the flat of his hand. The ooohs and aaahs he got are easily duplicated in the field.

    When I take pulled pork to a tailgate I normally try to get the butt finished a couple hours before I plan to leave, then pull it, cover it in a foil pan, put it in the cooler, and go.

    I pulled a butt at a tailgate once, but with limited cleanup I decided it is easier to pull it right before I leave the house.

    I do it one of two ways. I usually pull the pork and put in foodsaver/vacuum bags ahead of time. Then I use a pot of water on the grill or coleman stove to heat the bag.
    The other way I heat it is to put the pulled pork in ziplock bags and then heat it in a pan or pot at the game. I use chicken broth for pan heating.

    I never try to cook it the day of the game because you can never schedule when a butt will be done. And like Fidel said pulling pork can be messy.
  • i vote with the other responders who said to pull the night before and then reheat in a crock pot on game day. that's what i did this past weekend.
    before leaving for the tailgate, i reheated the PP with a can of regular coke and a little additional water. then i put into a crock pot on high just to get it warmed up.
    then i switched to low, plugged an inverter into the cig lighter in the car, placed the crock pot on the floor of the back seat, and plugged the crock pot into the inverter. my crock pot is rated for 110watts on low. YMMV so make sure your inverter is rated a bit higher than the crock pot wattage.
