store bought pizza doughs

So i want to try our first pizza on the egg this weekend. I've got a platesetter and lrg pizza stone for my LBGE. I'll probably go legs down with the platesetter and pizza stone on ceramic feet on top of the plate setter. Probably shoot for 500 for 10mins or so for thin crust. will let ceramics heat up for 45 mins.
For our first pizza we bought pillsbury pizza dough. It's in a tube and i think it's thin crust. Yes, i know, i should make my own dough but: 1. I'm lazy. 2. I don't have a food mixer. It seams like every receipe for pizza dough requires a mixer which i don't have. And the better part of a day to make the dough. So for now i'll try the store bought. Baby steps...For toppings i've just got pepperoni and some shredded cheese in a bag. Sounds kinda generaic doesn't it. What do you guys think? Do you think this'll be...... better than just calling up pizza hut?

I always buy a pound from the bakery in my grocery store. Around here they all sell it fresh.

Several of the pizza shops in our area will sell you a doughball. Found one nearby that has an amazing dough that tops my home made. Call around and see what you can find. Have fun!

I'm making Pizza tonight, I made the dough yesterday without a mixer

You're right on with that setup and plan! That's exactly how I do mine. I do make my own dough, but, you'll get good results with the store-bought stuff. I've even used the store-bought variety that was already partially baked......don't remember the brand name, but, that was a super easy way to do a pizza.......

A neighbor brought over a great pizza she made with Trader Joes dough. She rolled it out to make it even thinner and topped it with Proscuito, Asparagus and fresh mozzeralla. We cooked it on the egg.. Fantastic...and I will buy if I don't make it fresh.
I make mine and will try Ross in Ventura's suggestion - seems similar to the method from Alton Brown with the slow rise/fermentation method..
Alton Brown Pizza Dough -
The canned dough is pretty generic but still good.
I agree with the others...the Trader Joe's dough is $1 which is even cheaper than canned, and tons better. But a good pizzaria dough is even better and runs usually $2-$3. -
Everyone else is correct, but I use the same Pillsbury pizza dough in the tube. I have always liked it, quick, simple, and it tastes great.
I use a pizza screen, cook one side of the dough till lightly brown, pull it and flip it, then sauce and add toppings to the cooked side and back on the Egg till bottom is done to my liking. Good luck and yes I think my worst pizza is much better than what I can get from the delivery places.

Thanks Ross, I bookmarked that site

It'll probably be much better than most pizzas you've eaten, definitely better'n Pizza Hut.
I just by pre-packaged dough at a market. If you have Trader Joe's near you their dough is consistently good. Your setup sounds fine, but let it heat up at least 45 minutes, maybe an hour, before the dough hits the stone.
Enjoy and good luck. -
Apparently I type too slowly. There were no replies when I started, although I did answer a phone call. This forum is a wonderful help.

Yes, it will be better. I use store bought dough all the time. I do not know what part of the country you are in but Trader Joes and Fresh & Easy both carry premade dough that I get good results from. Premade dough makes pizza an easy/quick midweek cook. My only advice on the cook is thicker pie, cook lower temp for longer, thin pie go hot and fast. Good luck.

that's exactly what i was hoping to hear!
I think i'll try to make my own dough someday, however right now i think i'll try the store bought stuff. Will keep you posted of how it goes! -
This forum is a wonderful help
Yes, you are exactly right. And even though pizza questions have been asked hundreds of times already, people still take the time to read and respond. I know because i spent all day looking up "pizza dough", "pizza help", "how to cook a pizza", "first pizza" etc. Yes, i do use the search button and gain quite a bit of info just from previous threads. And even after reading ALL those threads (ok, maybe not all, but quite a few!) I still wanted to start YET ANOTHER pizza thread.
 -
I'm going to have to find a trader joes because you're like the 4 or 5 person to say that on this thread.
-
I'd highly recommend using parchment paper under your dough. That way you just slide the paper from your screen right onto your heated stone - then off again when it's finished. If you have seen pics of pizza that fell apart and stuck to the peel/plate while trying to be put on the stone, you would know why I suggest this.
Good Luck.

The TJ's sauce is good too.

where to buy a piazza screen? looking to do our first pizza

I don't use a screen or parchment or anything. I use a super pizza peel. I love it. Check out the link:
