Whole chicken frozen question
Hitch
Posts: 402
Want to cook 2 whole birds tonight from SAMS, but they are currently sitting in my freezer. How long will thaw take, and any suggestions on process of thawing to be ready at 5:45?

It depends on the size of the birds. You won't have time to thaw them in the fridge, but you can use cold water to thaw them in a few hours.
See the Safe Defrosting section here:

Good luck! -
I thawed a 4 lb Sam's bird in about 3 hrs. I ran cool water over the bird and into the cavity until a little pliable. Then I spatchcocked it. Getting the keel bone out was a chore. Put towels under the bird and put it in a cool m-wave for an hour. It was dry and ready for EVOO and Dizzy Dust. :woohoo: I was eating one hour later

I have also thawed whole birds in a sink of cool water. I think the main thing is making sure to keep an eye on them and get them in the fridge once they are soft enough.
