Talked to the supermarket meat department yesterday and asked for a pork butt roast and was told its the same as a pork shoulder roast. Is it?

the shoulder has two parts, butt and picnic, sometimes called picnic shoulder. if its more pointy its the picnic. both work, some like the butt because there is more meat, less fat, cleaner pull. some like the picnic because there is more flavor and they are usually cheaper.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Both will work for pulled pork but the butt & shoulder has different tastes (both good).
Thirdeye has a good write up on his food blog, it's a well worth read.

if its the picnic, when you pull it you will see a couple layers of fat, they wipe out easily, then pull the rest. i buy picnics for my own use, butts if its a bigger event

But the best pulled pork Barbecue is the entire shoulder (picnic & butt)pulled and mixed in together, IMO. It could be argued that whole hog, pulled and mixed is best.

Ron,
You would need a big egg to do a mature hog wouldn't you?

I could borrow Sparkys new Knife and hack the bastard into pieces then take it to Canada where I know a crazy guy with a dozen or so Eggs.
