OT- BEST PASTRAMI EVER!!!
mad max beyond eggdome
Posts: 8,134
we were up in new york city on saturday, having taken sydney up the rest of her college stuff. ...after dropping off her gear, we took her into the city for lunch... rather than the usual Times Square foray, we decided to head down to Houston street to Katz's Deli for lunch and the to Russ and Daughter's to stock up on "soul food". . ..

Katz's is one of the more well known deli's even if its not in the broadway district. . . one of the things its famous for is the "orgasm" scene from "when harry met sally" you know when meg ryan fakes the orgasm in the deli....place is packed all the time. ...

they even have a sign right over the table where the movie was filmed. . ..

but what katz's is really known for is the pastrami. .. its hand sliced (as are all the meats there). . .you go up to the counter, tell the countermen what you want for lunch, and they prepare your sandwiches while you watch. ..when they need fresh briskets (corned beef, roast briskets, or pastramies), they turn behind them to these big steamer bins, and reach in a pull out fresh steaming hot briskets on the spot and carve them by hand on the spot!!. . .not an electric slicer to be scene anywhere in the place!! . ..oh, and while you are standing there waiting, they put up little piles of meat on the counter for you to taste. ...gotta love it!!

here's pics of my pastrami sandwich, catherine's chicken liver sandwich, and spawn's tongue sandwich. . ..all were fantastic (well, i don't touch the chicken liver, but catherine said it was some of the best she's ever had). ...i also had half a corned beef sandwich, but i'd eaten that before i remembered to pull the camera out. .heee

i usually prefer corned beef to pastrami, but i'll tell you, this pastrami was the best i've ever eaten, anywhere!!!. ...moist as could be with just the right amount of pepper/smoke. ... it melted in your mouth!!
after stuffing ourselves at katz's, we walked a block, yep, just one block, up houston street to russ and daughters, purveyors of the best jewish soul food (15 kinds of smoked salmon, whitefish, pickled herring, sable, sturgeon, etc), bagels, cream cheeses, etc. . .) you've ever seen in your life. . .you should see these guys slice salmon, its so paper thin you could read the newspaper through the slices!!. . .sent the spawn home with a goody bag and we took a goody bag home to virginia as well (norwegian smoked salmon, whitefish salad, pickled herring). ...

here's my breakfast from sunday morning back at the house (smoked norwegian salmon with a schmear of cream cheese on an everything bagel with pickled herring and onions). . . .it just doesn't get any better than this. . .i keep saying i'm gonna try to cold smoke a salmon fillet on the egg. ..gotta try one of these days. .

if you ever get to NYC you have to make a trip down to houston street!!!

That is supposedly the place to go, more so than "Stage". The pastrami looks fabulous and the tongue pretty good also.
Hope you all are having fun! -
Max,
Now I'm hungry. Beautiful. If you ever get to Montreal, you have to try Montreal smoked meat. They used to have a hockey team there many years ago but I think they went to the WHA.

Great post.
How long did it take to get through the line at Katzs?
What time of day?
I hate crowds but would love to visit with a "guide".LOL
darianThank you,DarianGalveston Texas -
Y'know, Max, that post is downright cruel. No delis where I live that deserve the name. Lucky to find maybe 2 kinds of smoked fish. Sigh...
Could you tell how the tongue was done? Roasted, then steamed? Looks pretty firm, or just maybe cut with great finesse. -
Man, you Northerners eat some funny stuff!!! (not the pastrami)
Where's the heck are the fried gizzards and calf fries? :silly:

Very cool! I hope you didn't reenact the orgasm scene, Spawn would have been appalled!
-
we made sure catherine wasn't sitting at that table for that very reason!!!!
-
yeah, hard to find testicles in NYC. ..although you'll find some wierd stuff over in china town and korea town!!
-
Max, you really know how to choose right.....looks like you had a great time....BTW...got the mexican flag already......what is theme México going to be all about????? :P
-
cut with finesse. .. .most good delis boil the crap out of it, then slice it when its good and cold and firm (you can slice it thinner that way)....then if you want it steamed they'll throw it in the steamer for a few minutes for you...spawn likes her's cold. ..i like mine steamed. ...
-
we were there at around 1:30 on holiday saturday. .lines moved pretty quickly. .. .we were there less than an hour total. ...so not bad at all. ..and the table seating is like cafeteria style. . .you share the tables with others. .there were three of us and two empty chairs at our table, so a couple of strangers came and ate at our table as well.. ..you become 'chummy' with complete strangers.. ..great place!!
-
one of these days i'll get up there.. ..i also heard they had a hockey team up there, some club team right?? LOL. .hey, caps started rookie camp yesterday!!!
-
the stage is more famous for the corned beef than their pastrami. . .and all of the broadway delis are more known for their huge sandwiches (and huge prices). . .anymore i think at the stage and carnegies in particular, you are paying for the "name" as much as anything. ...the last couple of times we've been to broadway district we've eaten across the street from the stage at a place called 'ben ash's" deli.. ..food was just as good, just as expensive, but the line was a lot shorter!! . .
-
thanks. . .stay tuned. .. .i'm going to post something in the next couple of days!! . . time to get the team mexico ball rolling!! . . .
-
Now that is what I call "REAL TORTURE". You got to stop this kind of posting. I can stand the shots of ribs, butt, steak, pineapple, etc. but not this.
-
i am with MBR.. your killing me with that stuff, i could spend a week there just eating.
pehaps a doggie bag at our next competition or meeting??? please
missed you at new holland,,, specially at box prep and turn in time .. hillard tell you how he tried to bird dog the woman who won the guru you tube contest???/ -
Max,
Makes ya wonder why we need fast food restaurants. I have spent a good deal of time in NYC/NJ and I know what you mean. Only place that comes close to NYC pastrami is Cleveland, OH. Yep I said it, Cleveland OH.
Great pics, thanks for sharing.
PS you know you could have driven home the back door way via Frederick then 15 south and I could have met you in Leesburg for a pastrami sandwich on rye hand off. -
Oy vay! Nothing that good in Southern California, but I have my memories growing up in Chicago.
My Dad used to bring home smoked whitefish on Sundays and now that I think of it, that is my very first memory of smoked food!!!!!! I LOVED it, even though I hate all other finny fish.

bill, try "chutzpa" on west ox road shopping center behind fair oaks mall. . . they make their own pastrami and corned beef. .. .best corned beef this side of broadway. . .they also make their own tongue. . ..very VERY good!!!. . . they are transplanted new yorkers and they know how to do it up right!! . . .you can also get some decent creamed/pickled hearring there (although i think it comes out of jar) . . .and they even have very good black and white cookies that they import the cookies from brooklyn, then ice them themselves. .. .
-
LOL . ..sorry rich. . . most food is great on the egg. .. .but sometimes you just have to go to the "source"!!
-
yeah, i'm sorry i missed new holland too!!. .sounds like you guys had a good time. .. .and no hillard didn't tell me about hijacking the guru girl!!!. .but it doesn't surprise me. . . .sounds like something he'd do . ..
-
yeah, there is no real deli in southern CA. . .of course, you can go to www.russanddaughters.com and they'll be happy to ship you some!!
