:( Since I haven't really figured out the spider/adj. rig/woo thing, had an EGG-dea :woohoo: --that's a brain engaged moment B)

... had this new fire ring awaiting the new fire box for the Large....say, why not make a raised grid
It worked :silly: :woohoo: :silly:
did some fantastic boneless/skinless chicken breasts last night with Caribean sauce. The dome temp was 500 but brought it down to 400 quickly after putting them on...flipped once (sides 1&2), sauced, and flipped again--GREAT!!! moist yet fully cooked and sauce not burned.
may get the hang of this eggin' thing yet

Always more than one way to get a cook done. Good thinking. I really like cooking higher up in the egg.

I am trying to envision the height of a double fire ring set up, I am guessing about the same height at the adjustable rig. Ribs work out great at that height. If you had another grid you could also put one grid on the first FR and then the second FR and the second grid.

  • B) Kent, you are loosing oxygen :woohoo:

do have a CI and a Porceline.........

that would raise it to about 1.5"???

dare not set the cast iron on bottom, cause the new fire ring might crack and it may not be under warranty if used like that, heh??
might also get hotter than desired...now, would the cast iron on top be too heavy?

Does he really have red hair? Talk about a wrong mental image. Come to think of it I don't think I have ever seen a picture of him.

Any way Denver by the way of Casper from here... :woohoo: :woohoo: Road trip.

There are not a lot of roads from here to there. At Fort Steele I would have to go through Muddy Gap, Alcova. I have no idea what those roads are like but they sure are not straight. Probably would be easier to get to Cheyenne backtrack to Casper.

I can go east then due south into Denver or go south then east towards Denver. If push it hard and fast it takes 10 hours to get to Denver (thats if I don't drink anything and pee in a cup).

I was thinking the fire rigs wee about 2 - 3 inches tall.

The reverse would work fine and not the CI isn't too heavy. The weight is distributed around the entire circumference of the fire ring.

The ceramics are rated to, if I recall 1,800° and using the egg normally I don't think one could get the ceramics anywhere that hot, that high in the egg.

Why do you have a 2nd fire ring and fire box?

  • BGE makes a 2" fire ring that I've been using for years!
It sits on top of the regular fire ring and works like a charm.
  • I saw that setup on a Mini at the Waldorf Eggfest a couple of years ago.

Here is another thought. Long rambling, but I think you';ll get the idea. Since I had 2 larges, I bought two 2" fire rings to go with the old 3 tier rack. That also meant I had two grids (one for each large)

I would set up my own 2 tier rack for briskets and butts. I would go with the following set up:

    fire box
    2"fire ring
    platersetter
    grid
    (place briskets on grid)
lay other 2" fire ring on 1st grid
    put other grid on
(butts go over briskets on 2nd rack)

It worked out very well for me on my large egg. I could also add a 2"fire ring to the 4" and make a raised grid (probably indentical or similar to yours)

Good idea. N ot as easy to remove and handle in general as a woo ring but very smart indeed.
