Chiminea Ceramic--Hot to touch?
I saw a Big Green Egg Chiminea at a local patio store and was told that it was made from the same ceramic as the space shuttle tiles, and therefore did not get hot to the touch when in use. I have seen some posts on this forum which are several years old which indicate that this may not be true....or has the ceramic in the current model been changed? This would be a major selling point to us, from a safety standpoint. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Giving the dealer or salesman the benefit of the doubt they are misinformed and have incorrect information.
The egg or Chiminea is not made of the same material as the space shuttle.
The first Safety Tip for the Chiminea is "Do Not Touch When In Operation".
Here is a link to correct information.

I don't have a Chiminea but many others do. I will leave it to them to share their likes & dis-likes with you.

I have a newer chimnea, and trust me they DO get hot. There isn't a seperate firebox as eggs have so the heat transfers straight through. They are durable and a fun addition to your egg collection.

I have never been up close to a Chiminea..
The wood in the picture looks like standard length for a fireplace -- will that work in the Chiminea or do you need to cut it shorter? -
good morning Bob
you are right , that is my 2 cords of fireplace wood. i thought it would make a good picture. i pull out the smaller pieces and scraps and save them for the chimnea. i also use the stuff the wind blows out of the trees and various other scrap -
"same as the space shuttle tiles"
that is some funny stuff. somewhere in the literature for the BGE it refers to "space age ceramics", but to equate that with the space shuttle is some pretty funny stuff.
yeah, the chiminea gets hot. VERY hoted egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -
I regularly will run my hands over the outside of an that is in use just to check it's heat. I instintively did that around a chimnea one time.....never again.

So, if I want to get some wood cut for a Chiminea, what length is best? -

Wonder if he'd be willing to build a fire in it then hold his hand on it to demonstrate??

Another victim of marketing nonsense. Space-age is one of those terms that cracks me up. Considering we've been in the age of space travel for decades, why is this term something the general populace (hence its use in marketing) latches on to?
Did you know I ate space-age chicken last night? Ate it off a nuclear-age plate. On a computer-age deck table.
