Nomax gasket question
Ribhead
Posts: 123
After 3 months or so, my original gasket finally came off during a very hot cook! I have continued to do a few cooks without a gasket without any problems.
I have read a few posts about some eggers never replacing their gasket and are perfectly happy!
Question - has anyone had a nomax gasket go bad! I would replace with a nomax gasket if I know I will not have any more problems! but if the nomax is going to go bad - I am thinking about just going without!
Thoughts?

I've had a nomax on my large for a while now and so far so good.

they will all wear out at some point. I just put a nomex on my NEW TO ME $120 mini and I like it.
just make sure to pre-shrink it -
Nomex is practically indestructable. Very, very durable. I would guess the useful life at several years based on my experience in the last year with it. Mark

I think that some have had problems with the adhesive failing and re-glue with 3M's #77 adhesive. Try a search for 77 and see if a thread comes up?

Ribhead,
I can't help with the nomex but I want to clarify something. I believe those of us that don't cook with gaskets have not had their gaskets fall off but rather decay to very little or nothing. The gasket is there to act as a cushion for the closing of the ceramic faces. I would think if yours fell off completely, you might be wise to replace it.

I agree with LS as if for no other reason it is nice to have some padding for the one time the dome comes down too fast. I haven't replaced the gasket on my mini yet and I scared the crap outta myself once when the lid came down waaaaaay too fast! :pinch:aka marysvilleksegghead

As it seems not Nomex is the best solution BGE has for gaskets.
I have read 2 posts where Nomex has come off eggs, both due to adhesive issues.
If enough stress due to heat, improper use, improper installation, flashback, alignment problems is put on a gasket it may/will fail.

Not only does it provide a good cushion for the ceramic, it is essential for the low and slow cooking of ribs.
A properly installed seal help keep out unwanted air providing better temperature control and helps extend your charcoal use. When you are done cooking and close off both dampers, your charcoal will extinguish very quickly and reused at your session.
I’ve had my large Egg for many years now and I replace my gasket annually. The replacement seal will do both the base and lid with enough left over that I also apply a ring around the very top to help seal the daisy wheel to the lid. -
I had a nomex gasket fail after just a few months during a high temp pizza session. Not an adhesive failure, the gasket burnt away for about 4 - 6 inches.
I learned that RRP helps out fellow eggers with Rutland gaskets, so I dropped him a line. IMHO, the Rutland is really a great solution. I changed out the nomex from my medium and large, and I haven't had any problems since.

Grill Miester,
Smoke always comes out of where my gaskets used to be. I can do pretty good ribs too.
