wood, the grate is big enough for 2 racks of ribs and more. The large is a great cooker, & recommended for your first egg. After a while, you may want to add on a different size or two (or 8 if you're some people around here  ). The demo you are going to should be enlightening, good luckhappy in the hut

I have a large; last weekend I did four racks - two long pork racks and two slightly smaller beef ribs. I put'em in a rack, curled the pork ones around the outside - plenty of room.

here is 20 racks and I'm not sure thats even the record

LOL....there is no telling how many racks you could get on a large. However, just laying them out flat on the main grid, one level..three racks fit perfectly. I do them often.

More like 6-8 racks of ribs vertical.

Wood - when I was trying to figure out which size to buy I was leaning toward an XL. That's because I was coming off a Weber charcoal grill and the grate on the XL is about the same as the Weber. Based on the advice I got on this board, and the price difference I decided on the Large and I'm SO glad I did.

Steven, I have no idea to what you refer :laugh:happy in the hut

As a relative newbie--by all means get the large. Next on my wish list is a small for home and a large for the beach. There are way more gadgets for the large and you will definitely want gadgets. There are only the two of us at home and I use mine an average of 4-5 times per week. I have not used my oven since we bought it. Can't wait to hear what you learn at the demo....
