Greetings to all!
I'd like to introduce myself since I'm a newby. So new, in fact, that I haven't even bought my first Egg yet! I've been reading the forum faithfully for the last couple of weeks and getting the hang of all the lingo. Please correct me if I get it wrong.

I made a short journey to the Mothership on my lunch break today to sign up for the August/September classes. I just had to buy something else while I was there so I picked up three Dizzy Dust rubs that I've heard so much about on this forum. My first class will be BGE 101/102 in a couple of weeks. I can't wait! Between now and then I need to figure out what size Egg will be my first purchase. Since BGE offers 10% off any purchase during the class it will certainly be worth it for me to wait until class day to make my purchase. And from reading this forum I know you HAVE to have at least two Eggs, right?

I'm sure I'll have questions when I finally get my hands on my first Egg but until then I'm just going to keep reading all this good information so I don't have to ask questions that have already been answered and keep imagining how the food in all these beautiful pictures tastes. I'll worry about getting my hands on a jar of La Bomba later. :P

This forum is Egghead Crack! I have yet to get my egg, but I have all of the extras already, and you are not alone in deciding you already want multiple eggs from what you have read here. Hmmm, maybe this is a cult :woohoo:

    Thanks for the nice welcome!

Right now I'm thinking about a large and either a Mini or a Small. I'll be cooking for myself most of the time but will need a larger egg when I have friends over. I thought I would probably start with the smaller Egg while I learned the ropes and work my way up to the Large when I'm ready to cook for a crowd.

    Cheryl,

Unless price is an issue, I would also recommend a large. As mentioned here, many more accessories for the large and it is easier to do low & slow cook on than the small.

I had a large for 3 years before I recently added a small (cooking for only two of us 98% of the time).

You will be much happier with the large.

You need to look into a Maverick (model ET-73) remote thermometer. i use mine on almost all cooks. They run $40 or so.

Down the road you will want an instant-read thermometer. I learned about the Thermapen here and LOVE IT ! More pricey - $89 ish

    Good links:

    Enough!

    Welcome to the cult!
  • I too suggest a large. It is so very versitile and can cook everything. Then once you figure out like I am that everything is only everything that cooks at the same temperature can be cooked on one egg at a time, it will be time for the small.

Welcome Cheryl. Be sure to register and attend Eggtoberfest in October. You'll be blown away by what nice people and great cooks Eggheads are. There is also an informal North Georgia Eggheads group that gets together occasionally. My business is in Tucker, about five minutes from the Mothership if you ever need to consult. I jumped into a Large Egg two years ago and never looked back. I added a Small a year later, so yes it's hard to invest in only one. ;)

FYI, the "Original" Thermapens are on closeout sale for $74 at thermoworks.com. I just ordered one last week. I didn't feel the extra $22 was worth it for the new splash-proof ones.

Thanks for the good tips everyone! Ok, now I've changed my mind again.....get the large first and the small/mini later. How many more times will I change my mind before I make my purchase? :)

I was looking at the Themapens this morning and noticed the new model and the sale on the old model. So the "splash proof" model isn't worth the extra cost? if that is the only improvement then I will take advantage of the sale on the old model. I have a wired remote thermometer that I've used in my oven. I don't know if that will work on the Egg at lower temperatures. I'll have to re-read the instruction manual to check the limitations. I know I'll be buying lots of EGGcessories soon.

I'm glad to hear about the North Georgia Eggheads group. That will be a fun way to learn and maybe try out some things I learn in my classes. I want to be sure I know what I'm doing before I try to cook for family/friends.

    MtnBlue,

I agree with everybody on the large. Two is not a neccessity but real nice to have. There are some here that are so eggdicted they have three or even more. ;)
