I'm thinking about getting a BGE in september. At first i was set on a large, however after reading several posts about how great a small is i'm beginning to second guess myself. 99% of my cooking would be for just my wife and I. I'm thinking maybe we'd be better off with a small or medium? Wouldn't a small or medium heat up faster and use less fuel compared to a large? I've been on naked whiz's site and i know what he would recommend... but i want to hear from all the other "eggheads" out there. I know alot of people would say get a small and a large, but i don't think that would fly to well with wifey....

I'm sure this question has been asked 1000 times allready, sorry for the reduntancy!

    Large pusher...
  • I bought a large several months ago, and I'm getting ready to buy a mini as a supplement--specifically for those small, fast weeknight cooks (a couple of burgers, etc).

the large works better, i have both a large and small and usually am cooking for 1 or 2, i almost always use the large. i think i would use a mini more than the small and just use it for high temp searing and quick burgers, would have been a better option for me. the small doesnt get as hot as my large and it comes up to temp slower than my large, about twice as long, the small is a miser with lump though if you think you will be using it alot. if it were between the medium and large i would still get the large, better accessory options.

Small is awesome, but IMHO doesnt hold temp as steadily as Large. Medium has the same size draft door as Large(which is key) but probably uses less lump, though I have only cooked on a medium twice.

I would go with the large. Once you start using the egg for more than just grilling a couple steaks you will be happy you did.

    highpress,

I have a full set. The lump usage doesn't vary as much as one might think. The Medium is great and would probably meet your needs but for a couple of hundred bucks, you would give yourself a lot more capability with the large. You could do larger cooks and freeze batches etc. Ribs can be a problem on the medium as well.

I've owned them all, the large is the most practical and the XL is my favorite.
  • The large. A small will burn less lump than a large, but the large burns way less lump than regular charcoal cookers.

OK I'll be the first to admite that there are times I wish I had more grill space but for the most part I want 2 differant temps. I have a Medium and like you 75% of cooks are for me and wife and the other 25% for four people. I love my Medium and would't change for anything. As most folks on the forum know I have been wanting a small for a long time and have blown enough money to buy one many times over but still whining I don't have one! :P I want the Small for cooking sides such as potatoes, beans, ect at a higher temp than say I am cooking ribs at. I wouldn't go down any smaller than a Medium for a primary cooker. When I get the Small I think I will have the ultument set up for two people.

I have 2 mediums, which gives me about the same grill space as a large an a small. I hope, in a year or two, to swap out one of the mediums for a large. For now, with just 1 kid left in the house, its a good situation. Holidays with the whole family is served pretty well too.

I wonder if more folks would go with a medium if there were more accessories?

Wow, looks like most everyone who has posted would opt for a large. Actually i thought there would be more responses saying to go for a medium/small. Sounds like if i had to have one BGE, it should be the large. Well,
i thouth the small/medium might be more fuel efficient but i guess there's not a whole lot of difference their either. Thanks for the great info!

    Large
I cook for 3 most of the time and holidays perhaps 10-15 and the large excels all the time.

You are correct. Do not get a large for just two persons. A medium would do perfect and will use much less charcoal.

You can cook every thing that a small one will on a lrg. But you cant cook everything a lrg one will on a small. If I had my choice between the two, I would go big!! Have fun!!! :woohoo:

What you do highpress, you start out with a large, then as a second egg, then you get the small.

I did the small first, had it for 2 years before getting my large. Have had the large now for 6 mo's and not used the small at all. I see using the small when I do a turkey thanksgiving to do sides, etc....
Get the large first, then the small.
Salado TX & 30A  FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Just given another Mini to add to the herd.

  • For a primary Egg I would say a large. It is the most versatile of all the eggs. It is small enough for two and still big enough to entertain. A 16" pizza is a ferfect fit for the large as well as other baking. Big enough to cook a whole brisket or just a few burgers. :)

Lump usage is a small consideration vs capibility and usefulness.

Further, don't fill the lump all the way up in the large, use smaller loads and you won't see a huge difference is fuel usage.

There are two of us 90% of the time and with the kids & grand kids 24.

The large will work for both and all in between.

Doing it all over again in my case I would first get a large then mini and then a second large (maybe one of the larges would be an XL, not sure.

If you really think you only will get 1 egg and can't see going large then get a medium. Cook on either for a while and make a decision on what 2nd egg to get.
