Pizza Flop

Pizza's are one of my favorite cooks. Last night was a total flop!
I cooked them slightly different: platesetter legs up, grate on top, pizza stone sitting on grate. In the past, without issue, platesetter legs down, pizza stone on top of platesetter sitting on wire rack to seperate.
Cooked my normal time of 30 minutes at 400 dome although was having trouble reaching 400. When I pulled them off the bottom of the crust looked like lump! Since the only variation I had was the platesetter, stone setup I figure this is the problem.
Anyone have any insight or comments which could explain the burnt pizza mystery?

Tim, whatever the cause, going back to your original setup that was working without issue seems to be the right call. About what happened, I think that the flames were likely coming up around the plate setter & actually hitting your stone, making it much hotter than it would normally be if the setter were legs down (with the legs up, there is a several inch gap which is plenty of room for flames to roam around). When you do your normal set up with legs down, the flames cannot actually come into direct contact with the stone, which is why I believe most people do it that way with good and predictable resultshappy in the hut

Thanks Zippy, I would agree with your analysis. Sorry, no pictures Bubba Tim...it was embarassing enough without documentation. Although I did eat the toppings which were good!
