Paella Pan is too big

I know there are lots of ingenious members out there so I thought I would seek some advice. I bought a paella pan a couple of weeks ago with intention of using it on the egg. There is one wee problem -- the diameter of the pan, including the handles, is just a bit too big for the large egg. There would be no problems if there were no handles. One solution would be to simply cut the handles off. Another would be to bend the handles so that it fits on the egg -- they are made of metal. Any ideas?

I bought the exact same pan but I guess a little smaller as it fits perfectly in my large egg. I wouldn't cut the handles off as it would make it really hard to remove from the egg once filled with paella. I would simply bend them upwards so it fits in the egg.
    What size is it?

Found one in a garage sale for $1 a few months back and had the same problem. Under the masterful guidance of Thirdeye, I placed the handle in a bench vice and slowly heated the bending point with my MAPP torch. now it fits and the handles are vertical (90 degrees) to the pan surface.

It's the 8 person pan -- it's 15 inches in diameter not including the handles. With the handles, the diameter is 20 inches.

A friend of mine mentioned that I would have to heat the handles to bend. I only have a weedeater and not sure if it will generate enough heat.

Its funny at the store I was debating whether I should get 15in (38cm) or the 13in (34cm). I ended up taking the 13 in since I figured it would be enough and wasn't sure if the larger one would fit! Lucky me I guess :)
  • Sounds like a good reason to invest in a MAPP lighter  . It'll do double duty, fast egg lighting and save paella pan.

first... i'd either drill out the handle rivets or grind 'em off.... then i'd heat the handles in the fire(i read you have no torch) like a blacksmith does(once they are yellow hot.... they will bend easily with a pair of pliers).... then i'd remount them on the inside of the pan... thereby providing ample room for placement on the egg and easy removal.... thanks! rr

Thanks for the suggestion. A friend of mine dropped by and suggested something along the same lines. In the meantime, I went out and bought a second and smaller Paella pan :)

I have the same pan, I have always assumed the coating on the handles was not oven proof, am I wrong??

I sure hope it is oven proof. I just checked the La Tienda website and there is a similar paella pan on offer there that can be used in the oven. If I have a problem, I will let you know.

The handles will be fine in the oven. They do ok in my ceramic cookers at 400 degrees or so....
