So...picking up from this post: http://www.eggheadforum.com/index.php?option=com_simpleboard&func=view&id=686182&catid=1 we have the first "episode" of "Will it Egg?" featuring Quorn. Let's get started.
Here's what the little "beast" looks like out of its box and plastic container. Notice the wrap? More on that in a bit.

So I unwrapped it to get a "naked" shot of the Quorn. Quorn Porn if you will. No real noticeable odor. Maybe a hint of say bologna. Texture wise like very firm cookie dough.

So now I read the box to decide how I'll adapt their cooking suggestions to the Egg. It is then I notice they all say "Do not remove the plastic wrapper." Seems this version is meant to roast in the wrapper similar to using one of those roasting bags which it also says you can do. Well that's not really much fun on the Egg. How can you dist it or get any smoke flavor? I was concerned that they might have you do this because it would dry out so I did give it a splash of olive oil and a little salt & pepper and wrapped it in a little foil pouch. Thought I grabbed pics of that but maybe not?? Oh well...imagine a fatty wrapped in foil.
Because I was hungry I had to have a "Plan B" just in case. That consisted of Buffalo Burgers and some zucchinis. I really killed the zucc's They were a stringy mess when I took them off.

So after 45 mins I opened the Quorn up and did it direct for a few minutes. Even in heavy foil the bottom got a little brown, but not burnt.

Pulled it after about 5 mins and let it rest for about 5 more. Then sliced.

Smelled pretty much like a turkey breast and sliced much like it too.
So... Does Quorn Egg? - Yes
Is it edible? - Surprisingly Yes.
Had that somewhat mild and drier texture like turkey breast has. Taste was too mild for me. Wished I had some gravy, that would have made it much better. The texture was "too perfect." It had good firmess and a meaty feel tot he bite, but there was no sense of meat fibers or "grain" to it, think very firm bologna.
Will I be doing more of this? - Not likely. I'm not vegetarian, I'm not on any special diet and I have no food allergies. At $6.29/pound I could just get a real turkey breast or for that matter some good baby backs for much less. If this stuff had some fantastic shelf life and didn't require frozen storage I supposed I'd consider it for emergency rations, but that's not the case.
In short it wasn't bad at all, pretty decent in fact, but with no real special qualities it won't be in my Egging Rotation.
Next up: "Whole Chicken in a Can" if I can find it. read about it here: http://ihatemymessageboard.com/2009/04/23/a-whole-chicken-in-a-can/

Send a Dr., he's obviously lost it!

Thank you so much for saving me the trouble of testing it

"Soylent Green is People!!!"

Ok, I read the title yesterday and immediately thought of Letterman. Will it float? Or something like that. I'm always fascinated by the girl with all the sparks flying everywhere...that must be some kind of grider and steel combo. Anyway, I was looking for sparks, but that white piece of psuedo turkishness had no spark.

cancelled quickly? Who's with me?
Mike -
$6.29 a pound!!??!?!? Now I KNOW that there are fools born every second!!!
-
I'm just getting started.
-
You sir cannot possibly fathom the expenses it takes to synthesize such a substance.
I'm sure that for $6.26/lb the finest..uh...er...substances and compounds were used in making this delicacy.
Only slightly higher than baby heads per pound.

You know you are burning good lump there don't you.
When I saw that earlier post it sure looked it had a lot of sodium per serving.
Ya got to love vegetarians and what they are trying to do, but there is a reason there is a food chain. If all the little meat things running around are not cooked and eaten then look at all the global warming that would be produced from the poop and other things. Look at the heat put off by rabbit ears alone. There is some nursery in Idaho that are raising rabbits in their greenhouses just to heat the greenhouse. Double duty, heat and food.
Doesn't this look just a little more appetizing.
More power to you bitslammer I am following with keen interest. So far it's good to know what not to cook.
Just don't let this series morph into stuff like what's its like to hit your thumb with different types of hammers.
I had better put some emoticons about now.

and a comment - I am joking.
