Anyone use a Blazer Micro-Torch to start your fuel?

Just curious. I hear a lot of talk about MAPP torches - but I don't know enough about what I'm doing to invest in one.

Don't know if this flame is near as hot as MAPP or even propane, but that small torch would put your hand awfully close to your lump while you are lighting it. Lump will spark with gas torches, and I wouldn't want to be that close to it. Do yourself a favor and get a MAPP torch.

Can you point me in the direction of a popular one here?

dunno what's popular but I like my Bernzomatic BZ8250 Trigger Start Hose Torch with a 19.6 oz Fat boy bottle.

It cost a little more but I liked the idea of the 5 foot hose. With the hose if I drop the torch and it hits the shell or firebox it shouldn't hurt anything because it's so light. I can't say the same for the Fat Boy bottle though.
  • I agree the micro torch would not work too well and I agree a MAPP torch will work but will also put your hand an arm in the egg with popping charcoal. You could construct a shield of some sort I guess.

I have one of these and it works great. Keeps you completely out of the egg and away from the popping and sparking. I found it at both Ace Hardware and Lowe's.

It is propane and will take at least 10 seconds longer to light the lump vs. MAPP gas but that's 10 seconds longer to ponder the great meal to come. In fact, you may be able to use MAPP gas with it.

Lowe's, Home Depot, Ace, etc. Mine is just a torch that screws into a cylinder of gas, but I can hold the end of the cylinder and keep my hand out of the way. Ones with a hose are even nicer, but take up more storage space (if that is a concern). The BBQ Guru sells the Golf Club for use on a torch: Gof Club. The torch in the picture is the one I have. You can use Propane w/ a MAPP torch head, but not the other way around. MAPP gas torches can also be used upside down. Some folks prefer weed burners, but you're looking at more money for one of these.
  • Zeke, this one BuffaloChip linked to will get you far away from the sparks. I have the regular torch, and it works well, but it puts me pretty close to the sparks. Whichever one you use, I reccommend eye protection, some have had their eyes burned.

I may be wrong, but I don't think you can use a Propane torch head w/ MAPP. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the Venturi size and the difference in the viscosity of the gases. However, I pretty sure that propane will work w/ a MAPP head.
