Restaurant Depot's Black Angus Beef

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
I have read several times on this site and others that the Black Angus beef sold at Restaurant Depot is Certified Angus Beef, or CAB. I have purchased Black Angus Beef there and the packaging does not say the beef is CAB, just that it is Black Angus choice grade. The Restaurant Depot web site says it is their own line of Black Angus, not CAB. See below and scroll to the bottom.

Am I missing something here? Or what is going on?

the CAB program is a positive thing because it is essentially another grading program beyond just USDA select/prime/choice. I believe the stuff grades out to better than choice but not quite prime. sort of like "chairman's reserve" that some stores around here sell, which is essentially "top-choice".

but the whole "angus" thing means almost nothing. red angus, black angus... isn't most beef "angus"? red angus doesn't taste different than black.

when mcdonald's starts throwing the word angus around, you can be sure it's nothing more than marketing.

but the CAB program is something other than mere marketing.

You hit the nail right on the head stike.Just a merchandising gimmick to make more money.Buyer beware!!
  • I agree -- CAB means something. That's why I was disappointed to realize that Restaurant Depot was not selling CAB, but rather their private line of Angus beef. Many people on this forum seem to be under the impressions that Restaurant Depot's Angus beef is CAB. It is not.

    I disagree.

I have seen and purchased CAB beef in Restaurant Depot. In the Norcross store, for example, they keep briskets in 2 different areas of the walk in. One set of them are USDA select and choice, and in another section 20 or so feet away they have the CAB briskets.

I think each branch has different stock and supply. The correct warning would be for folks to be sure they understand what they are purchasing.
